The word "slipper" just means a low shoe that has no laces. It's called that because it is easily slipped on the foot. This covers a hundred kinds of footwear, from stealthy cloth shoes (ninja style) to modern rock-climbing slippers. You might hear the word and think only of ballerina shoes, but that's an issue with your imagination, not with the magic item.

Yup. You know, the first thing that springs to mind when I think of Slippers of Spider Climbing? Penny Loafers. Penny optional.

Far from too little fashion sense, I'm really tired of seeing illustrations of female warrior-types with entirely too much. I'm talking about otherwise well-armoured characters who leave vital areas like the upper thighs (which contain vital arteries - one cut and you could bleed to death in minutes), midriff or even mid-chest exposed. What armour you wear isn't a fashion decision, it is something your life may depend on. Most women I know agree that there are times when you want to look hot (and I thank my lucky stars for it), but going into battle is not one of them.

Let's see, my PC Plundar, the airship-pirate barbarian wears a loincloth, fancy-looking boots of levitation, a gleaming chain shirt +1, and a big tricorne hat. Oh, and instead of a hook (no self-respecting pirate has his full complement of limbs), he has a shiny silver magical hand (of dex +2).

I wonder why the name slippers of spider climb automatically brings to mind a mental image of something resembling ballet shoes? I have that same image, but I don't know where I got it from. Couldn't they be boots of spider climb, or sandals of spider climb? Oh well, at least I don't have a mental image of fuzzy pink bunny slippers of spider climb.

I've always mentally seen them to look like ninja shoes (tm).

My PCs usually have two sets of clothing - one for adventuring and one (if money permits, royal) for social occassions. The first set is usually endurable but ok looking stuff, the latter set is BLING-BLING.

As long as you don't look like Hennet or Mialee, you're heading in the right direction.

Oddly, my group actually has something resembling fashion sense. Well, except the warlock is forgoes clothes entirely far too often, anyway. No one is dressed to the nines, but no one has spikey armor or midriff-cut armor. Everyone is simply... utilitarian.

Think of them as ballerina slippers penny loafers, ninja shoes, or rock climbing shoes...it doesn't really matter. Either way, you look like a retard wearing armor with "slippers" on your feet.

If I'm a Ranger roaming the lands, I'd rather be wearing a good pair of hiking boots than some slip on thin-soled shoes.

Flippers might help me swim faster, but I'm not going to wear my suit & tie to work with flippers on my feet :p

I might if there was a decent chance the office would be flooded. Biking clothes look pretty silly to me, yet people wear them for tiny benefits compared to those that magic items grant.

Really, the sillier the item it looks, the more powerful it probably is.

Getting some items that are boots instead of slippers isn't likely to be a huge deal though.
