change it if you wish man but I get a smile every time i see it always have.A nd i think people should always feel free to use it.Its a nice thought for me for the pic to still be active on the boards, but everyone has there own tastes.

Given the large number of images people use as avatars around here that aren't themselves and aren't directly representative of them as physical persons, I don't see the problem with it. We know they aren't the real Gary Gygax any more than the person posting as Shemaska is a real yugoloth or I'm this crazy little dancing stick person (for one thing, I generally hate to dance).
We pick our avatars ultimately because they tickle our fancy. And a Matt Groening-style Gygax is a fancy tickler.

I've been seeing Gary's Futurama Avatar being used for years. If more people want to use it to show their love and respect for Gary, great. IF they are saying "I'm Gary!" to say they have a bit of Gary in their hearts, then great.

I'm not claiming that using the avatar is disrespectfull and I do understand that people use it as a tribute.
I'm merely stating my feelings about it.
I'm not tellign anybody not to use it, i'm just asking them (so I won't start asking mods to ban people who still use it). It's your own choice.

Yes, but what we have here, IMO, is a very different situation. Some posters are using an avatar of a person that up until 4 days ago was still with us, and who frequently posted on these forums.

That's why I think I am reacting. Like others have said, I don't demand anyone to stop doing anything, I'm merely saying how I react. How people will respond to that is up to them.

Also, given time, I'll probably won't react the same way, but this is, like I said, just 4 days after Gygax, an active member of this board, left us.

The tribute picture OTOH, would be perfect for those wanting to use an avatar that honors Gygax, IMO.

As someone who had a part in the avatar that Gary Gygax used, I have to say that it bothers me a little also.

There was a discussion about something to help people identify Gary, and he did not want to use a photo so I cut out the Futurama pic, and he liked it. Someone else edited it slightly afterwards if I'm remembering correctly, but unfortunately all those posts appear to have been lost.

Anyways peoples avatars are special, they can come to represent the person. To me that avatar "is" Gary Gygax on these boards. Perhaps because it's much easier to identify posts by the avatar than names. I remember being thrown off when Hobo/Joshua Dyal had stopped using his snarky looking guy for awhile. Or imagine if someone else started using PirateCats avatar, it could cause confusion and I'm sure people wouldn't appreciate it.

Like others have already said, I know no disrespect or harm was intended, but still I'm glad to hear that you'll change yours Gentlegamer. In my opinion it should be retired sort of like a hall-of-famer's jersey in sports.

I'd just like to point out that the scene being referenced is the one that made Chalton Heston cry tears of gratitude at their solidarity and their recognition of his efforts on their behalf. I think it's rather sweet and dorky.

Are you talking about the famous "I'm Spartacus!" scene from Spartacus?

If so, it's Kirk Douglas, and not Charlton Heston.
