Columbo was such a great series, standing head and shoulders above the rest of NBC's Mystery Movie series due to its unique plot structure; the audience knew who the murderer was before the detective did. As a result we got to watch an intellectual game of cat and mouse between detective and criminal. The Columbo persona was incredibly effective because the bad guys always underestimated his genius, in no small part due to the character's very real eccentricities, though largely due to the fact that he consistently seem puzzled, even when revealing the solution to the crime.
Such a great role and such and enjoyable character. Thank you, Peter, for portraying him so incredibly well.
(I'd be remiss to not also thank Richard Levinson and William Link for creating the character and writing most of the episodes. Fun fact: they also created Mannix and Murder, She Wrote, and adapted all of the Ellery Queen stories; such great television mystery writers!)
