Boo! Down in front! No official maps!
No kidding. Mapping out the world explicitly would gut all the flexibility of the PoL setting, leaving only its bad parts (lack of rich background and convincing political storyline).

I like maps. Maps are useful things. Particularly when I don't have to draw them.

The "official" PoL map (and yes, there needs to be such a thing) should be in the DMG, to allow DMs to release as much or as little info to the players as required, and to tweak to suit the individual game...but should very much use a "when in doubt, leave it out" approach when it comes to detail. That said, an official map would provide a handy frame of reference for tournament play, for module writers, and for DMs new to the trade.

The map should also be made copyright-free, so anyone can use it.

I'd support a map with no labels, just icons and terrain. There can not be an official labeled PoL map, though. That ruins the entire point of the PoL framework.

Hey, if this is for newbies why not give them a map to suckle on. I don't see a problem with it. I take stuff and put it wherever i want now, so it doesnot seem difficult to do.

I don't see why people are opposed to having a the map released. If they don't want to use it, they don't have to. Yeah, it could be in DDI rather than the core rules.

I thought 4E was supposed to appeal to new gamers. Wouldn't providing them with a simple map certainly help?

On the other hand, I just thought if no official map is ever released, I'm sure there will be plenty of fan created POL maps on the web (that might even be better than whatever WOTC put out anyway).

Still, having not decided yet whether I'm going to 4E, seeing the map to support all the new fluff place names (you have to admit there seems to be a lot and I expect much more) would help.

I guess the bottom line is that I just like maps (and don't care to draw them).

Yes WTC should draw us a map.

When I was a teen I like drawing maps. Now I don't. It's my least favorite thing to have to do as a DM.

The map can be a blank map. We'll draw in our own borders. They can make up multiple maps. Stick them on DDI! Somewhere, anywhere; just don't make me have to draw one.

My current homebrew what map does it use: Mystara, the known world (though I drop the Yarlum(sp) dessert from it).

I can definately see why some people would want maps, but I would have to disagree. I really prefer no implied setting. When I DM, I run my players through a small area called Taren's Ferry. There's very little in the way of defined territory or knowledge of anything but a couple of adventure hooks err.. I mean mysterious locations.

The players have knowledge of most locations within about a day's walk in each direction, but that's about it. I really like having the players guessing what's over the next hill. It makes things so much easier for me.

Do I need a river with Class 5 rapids and a clutch of angry Hippogriffs? Bang, there it is. Do I need an active volcano, and a nest of Giant Hornets? Bang, there it is.

What I do like are town maps though. My towns all seem to look like the Hollywood version of western Boom Towns. I guess I've watched too many westerns.
