Planescape 3.5e - Cold Black Mask

Heinrich Stronghand:[sblock] The rattle of Heinrich's armor coupled with his heavy footfalls prompted a moment of silence from the speakers outside. After a couple of heartbeats, the voices began speaking again. Straining to hear their words, Heinrich could catch bits and pieces of the conversation (Listen check = 20); both speakers sounded male, and their odd vernacular seemed to mark them as natives to the city.

"If this ain't the place, I'm fer givin' this rig the laugh," one muttered. "This whole thing turned into cake ever since that imp piker apparently got himself mazed or lost or whatever."

"Aye, well, someone's clankin' around in there," replied the other. "An' from the sounds of it, he's in a tin can, too. Ain't no Hardhead or Mercykillers around, so my jink's on it bein' one of them primes."

His companion grunted in response, but said nothing. A few moments passed, then, from a distance, Heinrich could make out the clanking approach of someone in heavy armor. The racket drew closer and closer until one of the voices hissed out in alarm:

"Oi! Stow that barrikin! Soddin' reaves. If this ride's gonna happen right, it's gotta happen now. Pike the others, they can catch up later."

With that, the now slightly-softer clanking moved away, toward the front of the boarding house by Heinrich's reckoning.

OOC: Right, I keep forgetting that level one spells from the player's handbook are practically useless in Planescape without house rules, being designed specifically for a setting in which you would not encounter outsiders until a much higher level if at all. :\ I guess I'll try casting blinding color surge. DC 15 or 16 cloaked.

Heinrich's breath hisses through his teeth as he picks up his shield with his free hand and nudging Sindr with one foot. "We have trouble. Wake the others quietly and be ready." Now prepared for battle physically, he offers a silent prayer to Heironeous, feeling his god's blessing lightening his feet and bolstering his body.

[sblock=OOC]Wake up Sindr, use a move action to strap on my shield and a standard action to activate Divine Vigor for 10 temporary hitpoints and +10ft move speed for 2 minutes. I'm guessing casting a spell might tip off the downstairs lurkers (since I can hear them), so I'll hold off on buffing for now.[/sblock]

Sindr starts awake at the barest touch of Heinrich's foot, and he nods silently in response to the cleric's whisper. Rolling to his feet quietly, he quickly shakes the others awake, passing the message along. Once Istvan, Pierce, and Hagen are up, he places his back into the best defensive position he can find - along a wall with line of sight to the windows and the door with obstacles between him and either entry point, if possible.

Having slept a few hours, István is nearly ready to start his day and so wakes easily at Sindr's prodding. Sitting up in the top bunk, the whisper-gnome hurriedly adjusts his cloak while strapping his weapon baldric back in place over his shoulder. "What's happening?" Hopping into a crouching position atop the bed, István pulls his scarf back up over his nose and his goggles down over his eyes.

The small boarding house room is a muted flurry of activity as the group prepares for the worst; donning armor, taking up defensive positions, calling on the power of their faith.

Hagen aided mostly by keeping out of everyone's way. "What should I do?" he asked, jaw set.

From downstairs came a heavy banging on the front door, and the group could hear a stir from outside their room as the tiefling proprietor roused and began to make her way downstairs.

Heinrich Stronghand:[sblock]Your potential foes aren't inside the building yet; unless you scream the words at the top of your lungs, you could probably cast a spell without tipping anyone off. ;)[/sblock]

=======================================
( ooc: DireLemming, I'm going to say Anthony cast Charm Person since that was your first choice.)

From a distance of mere inches, Anthony quickly wove the fabric of magic and launched the spell at the unaware planetouched in the doorway. A thrill of exultation runs down his spine as he feels the spell take root. (Will save vs DC 15 fails.)

Hearing the aasimar's voice practically at his elbow, the charmed shadowswyft turned in surpise. He wore crude leathers, reinforced with rusted metal in places, and his forearm bracer was lined with jagged bits of metal, but his pose was unthreatening. "Oi, where'd you come from?" he asked, his tone merely curious. There was a sudden animal snort fom within Dinah's room, and one of the thugs within yelped in fear. The shadowswyft tensed for a moment and glanced into the room. "That your fhorge in there? Mind calming him down a touch?"

Heinrich thought for a moment, then nodded decisively. "We do not know if they plan to do violence upon the proprietor, we should intercept them swiftly. Istvan, you may be best served leaving by the window and taking any who should flee." Before he opens the door, the priest offers a few prayers in Celestial to Heironeous, and his allies feel a sudden surge of clarity and purpose filling them.

[sblock=Celestial]"Guide our hands against the unrighteous, strengthen our arms against evil. In this darkness you shall be our light, and we shall not fear."
[/sblock]

OOC: Casting Bless on the whole party (and I can catch Pierce too, even if she's not awake, since it's a 50' burst :)), and then Bull's Strength and Protection from Evil on myself. All allies get +1 morale bonus on attacks and saves vs. fear.

Hearing the commotion at the front door, Sindr makes some quick magical preparations. First he pulls out a small strip of cured leather, chants a few words in Gnomish, and is surrounded by a briefly-visible field of translucent energy which quickly shimmers away to nothingness; then, he carefully extracts a bead-sized object from his spell component pouch and pops it into his mouth, uttering another phrase of power in Draconic this time, and vanishes from sight.[sblock=Gnomish]"Ward the body with iron and steel; ward the soul with will and zeal"[/sblock][sblock=Draconic]"As the eye vanishes, so the sight does."[/sblock]

His voice echoes softly from where he disappeared, "No worries, 'm still 'ere. Jus' a bit'a decepshun fer our guests."

[sblock=OOC]Cast mage armor and invisibility. MA lasts 3 hours, Invis lasts 3 minutes or until he attacks a foe directly.[/sblock]

Still sketchy on the details of what exactly is happening, István listens to Heinrich and then offers the priest a curt nod. The wayfarer is secretly pleased to hear the suggestion as he feels rather constrained in the small crowded room. Hopping down off the top bunk, István gathers up his leather sack as he glances over at his cup of milk near the window for signs of it curdling. "Remember that the devils fear the touch of silver. And keep an eye out for that Shou monk; he was still down in the common room when last I saw him."

Without another word, the wayfarer pulls his hood up over his head and quietly unlatches the window shutter. First taking a quick peek outside (Spot +11) to ensure that he's not making himself a target, (OOC: assuming not) István deftly hops up onto the sill and then disappears from view as, in seeming defiance of gravity, the wayfarer runs up the exterior wall and up onto the Slumbering Lamb's roof.[sblock=Cage Rattler]István's immediate goal is to find any enemies around the exterior of the building (Listen +6, Spot +11). To that end he intends to quickly (Speed 65-ft.) trace the roof's perimeter while using the cover provided by the roof's eaves to remain hidden from people down on the ground (Hide +23, Move Silently +17, -5 penalty for moving at less than full speed, taking 10 on both skill checks).[/sblock]
