Teos went through the original setting box and the 5e one and actually found them rather close. But missing a couple things many found key. More detailed ship battle rules for one.

But, we’ve also come a long way from then which he also noted.

I’ll add that I think many people thought there was more in the original first box too.
That is fair, admittedly.

My ideal 5e Planescape would have been a combo Sigil city guide and Manual of the Planes (plus player-facing options), and even as a 300+ page book, that would never be able to cover all of the supplementary material Planescape (and more general planar-oriented products) have built up over the years.

I'm more or less okay with the "Sigil and the Outlands" scope they've settled on - I think it's a reasonable fit for the page constraints they're under with the slipcase format, and doesn't void the chances of a more robust Manual of the Planes down the line - but if you're walking in with the expectation that you'll be getting the entire Great Wheel, disappointment is inevitable.

Quite a few of WotC's 5e products have been showing up for Roll20 via DMsGuild - not sure if it's everything quite yet, but I'm seeing at least up to Dragonlance and Radiant Citadel.

The differences this time are that they are managing expectations by directly telling us what's in the set, and expanding the page count so that material is adequately covered. Telling us directly that the setting book will cover only Sigil and the Outlands is far better than just leaving it open-ended and leaving room for unwarranted speculation. As for the page count, while the Spelljammer monster book was fine, both the setting book and the adventure could have used the extra 32 pages each that the corresponding Planescape books are getting. A longer adventure, and more rules, tables, and setting info, would have resolved most of the issues people had with that set.

I'm guessing the creature seen here and in other illustrations on this thread is a vaporighu.

The ship battle rules in Spelljammer weren't a big problem, IMO: they match up either Ghosts of Saltmarsh and other 5E vehicle systems.

The lack of any solid content for populating the universe is such a miscalculation, though: a big chapter of Adventure location and generation tools and hooks would have sealed the deal.

It's really hard to say, since the winds of the gaming industry are hard to predict.

Trying to guess what a new release will hold can be particularly maddening during those lulls in press releases where we are kept in the dark.

Fortunately, we can look forward to a chaotic flurry of information in the months leading up to the release in October.

Pandemonium won't see we probably... ;)
