Planning to do the Tomb of Horrors...

I bet you the 4e version is no where near as pointlessly lethal as the original.
I'm really excited on a very detached level of "What is 'lethal' for a system/design ethos that says 'reward players don't punish them,' 'bonuses not penalties,' and 'say yes, and...'?"

That said, I'm interested in running this for veterans of previous editions who have become accustomed to the 'friendliness' of 4e. The thing is, I suspect that it's either going to be a) 'It's nothing like the original Tomb of Horrors! What weaksauce!' or b) 'OMG, why did you run this?'

In which case, I'm probably going to look for players who are open enough to have some cheap laughs over a module that could go ANY way.

ToH is not a happy advernture for the light hearted. I would say play it mean and have fun, but I would warn the players to expect it to be rough and that you will not be pulling punches. It's only fair to give a warning. It takes a certen type of gamer to enjoy it. Most I know went through it in the 80's and have been truamatized by it... :) I myself can't wait to play and run both versions comming out. I do miss the old school Gygaxian modules of despair... :)

Ever since I read the original dungeon I've wanted to run it, I have it on pre-order on Amazon and they say it should arrive sometime in August, which means running it sometime in September when one of the players gets back from CV.

It's rather long-term planning for my group, but I want to book in the time well in advance as it's going to work well with back-to-back sessions...except I think I scared them.

They're panicking between what little I know about the 4E update and what little I have been willing to tell them about the original. A very small part of me is trying to take this into account when I run it...but that would not be true to what the dungeon is meant to be, would it? I feel as a DM, I need to run this so I can stop being so nice to my players and giving them breaks.

But it would be nice to tear a character sheet to bits because he jumped into that sphere of annihiliation...

On a side note, who else is planning to run it so soon out of the shop? I've seen Acererak's stats, and he bad ass!

I already have it, and I'm planning on starting it next Friday.

The original Tomb of Horrors was made for a specific purpose, and isn't appropriate for most gaming groups. But to say it's pointless and futile? I disagree. The Indy 500 isn't pointless and futile if a casual auto hobbyist has no business entering the competition.

For me, it's BECAUSE D&D is a game that I wouldn't think twice about playing Tomb of Horrors or something similar, because it can be often just as fun to fail in an RPG as to succeed.

Oh, I plan on running it, as soon as I can entice my group to try it.

Our group is playing the intro mod (the conversion of the original) and then, if that works out, the new hardback mod. We're doing it with characters made specifically for the mod and we already have backups ready.

Should be fun.

Having received and read the module last weekend, I have to say it's sufficiently close to the original that I won't consider running it - unless my players asked for it.

Depending on your viewpoint that may count as praising it for the faithful conversion, I guess ;)

I don't think we're talking about the same adventure. There was a free RPGday conversion of the original Tomb.

There is also a super-adventure version that was just released to premiere stores (and released worldwide in a week).
