You should try it. When I play one of my many female characters, I like to shave my legs and wear fishnet stockings, a garter belt and 4-inch pumps. But, you know, that's just to get into character.

A friend in High School did this exact same thing on Halloween, but did it soooo well no one even knew it was a guy in drag. Man, I've never seen jocks squeal in terror at the thought of being seen half-naked when she/he walked into the men's locker room for phys ed. ;)

My big worry is combining dressing up and playing a cross gendered character - a bit scary that!

Mods shut this thread down. I don't want to be responsible for any more prejudice.

Thank you.

I know a few people that have done so, but I've never done and neither has anyone in my group. Our imaginations are enough for us to get into character, but if someone wanted to "dress the part" then that would be OK to me... Just as long as the costume wasn't such that it interfered with play.

The most I've ever done is wear a masquerade style mask.

Basically the DM was running a side session for two of the PCs who had been invited to the costume ball. My character decided he was going to get invited for a seperate reason. I planned ahead with the DM to show up about an hour into the session unbeknownst to the other players. So mid-session, I simply walked in, wearing the mask.

If "dressing up for gaming" also includes me putting on a gaming-themed T-shirt (like one of my dragon-themed shirts, or a dragons & dice shirt, or one of my ENWorld shirts) and going to the game, then I do it, too. :) I almost ALWAYS put on something gaming-themed when I game.

Otherwise, I've never dressed up (as in, say, Robes, or funny hat) and gone to the game. So one way, my answer's always, and another way, my answer's "never."

Same here. I always try to wear a gaming themed shirt to game in. I have dressed up once on halloween in a hooded robe to DM a game though.

Most of my characters have had some favorite piece of my regular wardrobe. On days that I'm planning on being that particular character, I often (but not always) choose that outfit or accessory when I get up in the morning. It's something ordinary enough that I can wear it to work without drawing unusual attention.

One character went with my red wool vest, another was associated with a pair of brass earrings. One wore a blue skirt. Another a black ribbed sweater. Simple things that put me in the right frame of mind, but weren't costumes, per se.

The only part of this that's really geeky is that I admit that on occasion I've worn some of the above to things to job interviews, where I deliberately wanted to bring out a particular facet of my personality that I thought was well suited to the job.

It's pretty much always worked, too.
