Playable character without magic items: possible ?

JiCi

First Post
Is it possible to create/play as a character which has absolutely no magic items in its possession, and only relying on non-magical items to survive ?

Spells, spell-like and supernatural abilities are still allowed, whether it came from class features, templates or racial abilities.

Vow of Poverty in Book of Exalted Deeds is the typical answer to that question.

Other ideas off the top of my head that would do okay:
-druid
-sorcerer
-monk
-psion
-warlock
-dragonfire adept

Can't agree enough with Vow of Poverty. Played with a group that had a Clr9/Mnk4 (Ilmater) with VoP and this guy was a baddest-*ssed character I've ever seen, heard of or imagined. The DM needs to participate in this too and not toss DR 15/magic and good creatures at you constantly.

The Shadow Lich said:
Vow of poverty and levels of forsaker, and you will not even miss those magic items.
Uhm, that may be problematic. VOP requires you to Donate your treasure share to worthy orginizations. Forsaker requires you to Break magic items for bonuses.

Actually, VoP just requires that you not keep a bunch of stuff for yourself, and bars you from merely giving it to your partymembers.

Donation to charity is the suggested roleplaying method for dispensing of treasure given to the VoP character, but an ascetic could just as easily destroy or abandon treasure as donate it to charities.

i would not allow VOP in the party
and this is from a player the PC takes away from the group is alway beg for this or that becuase they can't own it is giveing away parts of the partys treasure and magic items and so they can't be used later and no benifet was gained such as a diffrent useful magic item
and if they think my PC is paying for thier spell componets their crazy stuiped
P.S. as soon as the group found out that the PC was giveing away MI he would no longer get any and his pathic character can whin all he want the ansewer would still be no

I don't personally have a problem with vop. The way my group has always divided treasure is to just keep it all in a pool of found treasure and roll to see who gets to pick first. Just go down the order and pick your item. Easiest way I have found to divide the treasure.

I think talking about VOP is really not what the OP was asking, as VOP is intended to replace the normal set of magical bonuses a typical character would get form magical items.

And for the record, no, I do not like VOP as it penalizes the rest of th party too harshly for one character's build choice.

As for the OP's question, I think it is totally doable, but the party is going to be a lot weaker at higher levels than the norm, as monsters and situation are built with the assumption that the party will have access to typical amounts of magic items.

A party without magical items, will have much lower chances to hit, ACs, saves and just about anything else than a party with a reasonable selection of magical items.

Doable, but it will take a bit of tweaking in the campaign world and especially in pre-published adventures.

I would like to play in that kind of game, though.
