Playable with just myself and my daughter?

I've introduced my 7 year old daughter and all I can say is enjoy watching them do things an adult group would never think to do.
I put her character on the outdoors map from the red box and threw an encounter at her. She saw a pile of rocks, and asked if she could climb it and push some rocks on the monsters. Even with her roll of a 4 on a d20, the rule of cool prevailed and the monsters were killed.
My adult group....swords/hammers/magic, and 60 minutes of combat.

They will surprise you.

This is why we had four kids; once they are all old enough, I won't have any trouble getting a group together ("You kids get in here and play or you're grounded! I mean it!")

If you have played CRPGs like Baldur's Gate, then congratulations! You have the experience necessary to run multiple characters, allowing your daughter to be the main PC (the Prophesied One, etc., etc.) You can try to convince your wife that it is a good way to spend quality time with your daughter; games can lead to discussions about Real Life that might be awkward to bring up in normal conversation, too. My wife usually takes advantage of the time I'm spending with the kids to do other things, though.
