Player challenging DM authority and competative

Unless you have something huge at stake then I don't know why that's so important? Everyone has a certain level of maturity. I don't think one DnD game is going to break your gaming career.

In Chess and Magic and in other games half the people who compete don't win any material. They might learn the game. Those who win are naturally good and/or worked harder. It really depends.

But on another note, games that big can survive without any ten percent of its players. So in conclusion you should strive to maintain above average. And continue playing only if you enjoy it too. ;)
