So, we had a bit of conflict in our weekly DND session last night, read on for details:
A group of PCs (four of us) walk into a crypt with two Scions of Kyuss (from Fiend Folio). They emanate a fear aura and two PCs failed their saves, became panicked, and ran away. There were two PCs remaining and we moved forward to engage in melee.
One of the PCs (me) had Knowledge (Religion) and I used the skill as a free action once I had moved up to the Scions of Kyuss. I rolled an 18 (after modifers) which should give me some "pertinent" information about undead creatures.
My DM told me something to the effect that, "You notice that they have worms crawling out their eye sockets and nose."
Anyway, to make a long story short we dispatched the Scions of Kyuss but not before they infected both PCs with the worms. We died in a matter of rounds as the worms ate our brains, reduced our Int to 0 and transformed us into Scions soon after.
So, here's my question: Shouldn't the successful Knowledge (Religion) roll given me something more pertinent than the above quote from our DM? Should he have said, "You know that these creatures can transform their victims into Scions very fast using the worms infesting their undead bodies." Since my PC is somewhat familar with undead, I know that you have 24 h before you are turned to spawn in most cases. So wouldn't this be an unusal and "pertinent" exception?
If that was said, I believe, I would have run away with the rest of my party or have used ranged weapons.
In the end, our DM relented and said that our Int scores both dropped to one before the party druid was able to make a successful Heal check to remove the worms.
However, I am torn. On one hand, I do think I was treated unfairly but on the other hand I do not want to lose the "you could die at any moment feel" from DND. Please note that my PC is an Outsider (Extraplanar) so cannot be brought back by any means at our disposal. So I will have to make a new PC otherwise.
I have had PCs die before and I always let them be raised and take the level loss b/c I don't want to bring in a new PC and screw up the story continuity (esp. if we're in the middle of an adventure). However, that is not possible in this case.
Thoughts?
