Player has a super rogue, DM needs help.

Give a fighter the Pressing Attack feat (can't remember which boook its in) i think it lets a fighter take a 5 foot step forward if his opponent takes one backwards...

This falls into the category of designing an opponent just to counter your rogue but I'll drop the idea here anyways.

A monk with the Blindsight feat from Sword and Fist. A monk with a 19 or 20 wisdom should have a very good Listen skill.

Use this some of the other excellent suggestions made:
Grappling...
Faerie Fire...

later,
Ysgarran.

Yes, but you can't constantly use those type of creatures against him, I think he's looking for a more universal solution.

I think talking to the player could help, but that depends on the player.

You could always have him disintigrated :).

Tata.

Disintigration works. I have lost a few characters that way. Nothing says dead like a pile of dust.:D

Here is my conversion of Icar from A2. I think he would be a good challenge for your Rogue friend. Note: Icar is blind.

SKILL KNACK [General, Trait]
COPYRIGHT 2001, Carl Cramér
You have some special quality that enhances one of your skills
Benefit: Choose a skill, such as ride. You have a special knack with that skill. You must have some special ability, such as long limbs for climbers; long fingers for pick pockets, lightning calculator for profession (bookkeeper) or being double-jointed for escape artist. You get a +3 bonus with the skill in question.
Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a different skill. The bonus does stack with the bonuses provided by skill learning feats, so you can take several feats to be ultra-specialized in a skill. Anyone can use a sense motive check to get a hunch about you (PHB). If the result is at least a 10, they are able to tell which skill you have a Skill Knack for from your appearance.
Notes: Because you must be somehow extra qualified for the skill in question, your character description should make allowance for such an aptitude. This means you can only pick Skill Knack when creating your character or be the result of some extraordinary event in the characters career, such as being 'gifted' with donkey ears from a curse for a Skill Knack to the listen skill or getting bowlegged from countless hours in the saddle.
Balance: 3.88 (Purp 3.50, Pow 4.30, Port 4.00, Comp 4.00, Rule 3.60)
Comments: Remember, it can only be taken at 1st level (as a standard trait), or when something happens to the character that would accentuate the skill chosen.

In my last session, the PCs fought a hide-happy rogue shadowdancer, who kept popping out of shadows with his spikey chain and doing massive sneak-attack damage, and then disappearing again.

Finally, the disgusted (and heavily wounded) cleric cast hold person on the shadowdancer.

One CDG later, and it was an ex-shadowdancer.

Remember the low will save that the PC probably has; intelligent spellcasters will try to target the character with will-save spells. Other suggestions are also good.

This character is optimized for certain situations, and that's all well and good; let him shine in those situations. However, there's plenty of situations in which the character won't do so well.

Daniel

Okay so he steps out and hits me for x sneak attack damage. Then he steps away and hides before I get my iniative.

One I know he is out there. I am no longer flat-footed. What do I do?

I ready a spell to make sure he can't do it agian. Like Hold Person, Glitterdust, Faerie Fire, Gate, Slay Living, Dominate, Geas, Prismatic Spray, Creeping Doom, Consecrated Harrier, Charm Person, Daze...

Or I cast Daylight or Deeper Darkness. Maybe I Levitate 20' straight up. Or cast Prismatic Sphere, of Wall of Force, Blink, Obscuring Mist...

If I am a fighter I ready an attack. Maybe it is a trip, disarm, or sunder. Then on my action before he can step away I hit him alot...

If I am a Monk I ready and grapple him... Oye the pain...

Maybe I am a High Level Rogue and I am only pretending to be that hurt...

Really want some smack down. I am a Shadow Mage...

Some good ideas guys. Thanks.

I can come up with individuel encounters that will challenge him, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution.

Still, I am really liking the vampire idea.

That sounds like a very useful feat, where would one find it? See if you can dig up the reference.

The plan...

Below is what I am about to email this player. Tell me what you thing.

But first, a bit of background. This player's character, a rogue has been a worshipper of Mask from the start. However, he has payed his deity very little attention. He took a level of Shadowdancer at his last "level up". To explain it, I came up with the idea that all of his shadowdancer powers are coming from Mask.

I had hoped this would cause him to pay more attention to Mask, but it only had a little effect so this is my plan:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arian

[After arriving in Thunderstone, by means of a very disturbing spell (teleport), Arian set out to find himself a good inn. While he was glad to be out of danger, he knew he would soon grow bored. He had managed to collect a great deal of coin in the last few weeks. It was more than he had ever seen. On top of that, he had found that he had gained the ability to remain undetected even when people where looking right at him. It seemed a small prayer to Mask was all it took…]

Arian padded silently through the quiet streets of Thunderstone. He had watched a wealthy merchant leave The Bear’s Den and had been stalking him for about five minutes before he felt it. Someone was watching him.

He didn’t know whom it was or where it was coming from, but nowhere he went felt safe. He activated the magical ring on his finger. Instantly a chill came over him. He had gotten used to that, it was effect of the magic. The ring made him almost impossible to see.

The night was cold; spring was still a month or more off. Arian told himself that it was the night’s cold breeze that sent a chill down his spine. He didn’t really believe it though.
The presence had begun to grow worse. It was always behind him; always just out of sight. He spotted a narrow alley up ahead and quietly slid into it. “Mask hide me.”, he whispered in near silent prayer and suddenly the presence disappeared. Nothing. It was gone as if it had never been.

Arian grinned at his own foolishness. “I’m just jumping at shadows. There is nothing in this town that can stalk me…..” The words left him as he turned facing deeper into the alley. The sense of dread had returned and it’s source stood before him.
It appeared to be a man; slim and about his own height. He couldn’t make out anything more in the darkness. Nothing except the red eyes that peered back at him.

“You call upon my aid Arian?”, the man asked, his voice low and raspy.

“How do you know me?” Arian asked in a trembling voice.

“Was it not I that you called upon for aid?”

“You can’t be…” , but he knew. The Shadowlord stood before him.

“You ask for my help and I gave it. You ask for things, but pay no mind to their price. Did you think you would not have to pay?”

“I didn’t know…” Arian stammered.

“You are a selfish mortal.”, the man said with a hiss. “Fortunately for you, selfishness is my domain.” He paused a moment to let his words sink in.

The man turned his attention to the ring on Arian’s finger.
“A pretty toy.” The man said. “But it is a crutch. I’ll take this as payment for now.” The chill that came with the activation of the ring faded. Astonished, Arian looked down at his now bare finger.

“Serve me Arian. Be my priest. My acolyte. Serve me and be rewarded. Serve me or pay your debt. Either way, I will have your soul.”

If you choose NO:

Arian’s head whipped back as pain ripped through his body. It seemed as if his bones would turn to ice. He screamed and thrashed, but there was no escaping it.

Arian jerked awake. His body covered in sweat, he gasped for breath. He knew it wasn’t just a dream. He had had similar dreams before, but this was different. He knew that he was severed from the god he once trusted. The convulsions took him and he vomited.

Tomorrow would be a new day. He had overcome the temptation of evil and was now free to walk a new path. No man or god would hold his leash.

[Loose 12,000 XP, -1 Constitution, +1 Charisma, +15 Hero points, +1 Luck bonus to all saves and Armor Class]

If you choose YES:

The shadows around Mask seemed to spring to life. They swept forward, wrapping Arian in their dark embrace. It was ecstasy beyond mortal comprehension.

He peered into the eyes of his god and glimpsed the pleasures that would await him in the next life. His body spun. Whirled about in the shadows like a child’s doll. The alley no longer existed; he was in a world of pure shadows and nothing could be more beautiful.

Arian jerked awake. His body covered in sweat, he gasped for breath. He knew it wasn’t just a dream. He had had similar dreams before, but this was different. He had accepted the call to Mask’s clergy. He rolled over and shook with the aftereffects of the Shadowlord’s carress.

There on his pillow was a black mask tinged with red, the Shadowlord’s symbol. It had all been real, and now his life had new meaning.

[Must swap 1 or more Rogue levels for Cleric levels (Max. 4), Must take next level as cleric or shadowdancer, +2 Wisdom]

Ignore the Hero Points thing. Just know that 15 is a lot. He has expressed intrest in being a cleric before, so I don't think he will balk at this. Your thoughts?
