Players Don't Care About Your Setting

I find LotR pretty boring in comparison to The Silmarillion and the Hobbit. I have been able to re-read the latter two a fair number of times, but there is invariably a point when I try re-reading the former when I grow bored and stop.
Does that point seem to be in The Two Towers? cause if so, you are not alone. I love the books, but when ever I do a re-read, I know I am not making it straight through. The Two Towers will always take me months as I will bounce to other books then return where I left off.

the answer is - so you have a basis for making decisions involving the things they will see.

I can't recall. It may be as early as somewhere in Fellowship. I am not in a rush to reread the book I know that I will likely not finish just so I can discover a mutable point where I happen to stop in a given read.

I'd say the utility of lore the players will never see varies, but it isn't necessarily useless. I mean, yes, there's some lore that's wholly off-screen and won't ever be relevant to anything, but you also have "iceberg lore" – lore that might not be visible in itself, but which acts as support for the lore that does make it on screen and makes sure that that lore is internally consistent.

Unless they are fans of the novels or tv shows or movies etc yeah they wont care.

My players really dont care if I run a Faerun or Krynn game. The lore stuff is just there for me :(

If we play The One Ring, which theyve seen the movies, that they get into.

I dream of playing/running a Dragonlance game with people as big (or bigger) a fans as me.

I'd play that in a heartbeat.

I really dig the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion is very cool, but I have trouble with LOTR too, its not bad per se, but it doesn't touch the Hobbit, or some portions of the Silmarillion.

This is a topic where its good to speak to the fact that there's different kinds of fun. Players who value exploration are going to appreciate a concrete setting more than something thats being made up on the spot.
