Player's Guide to Paladins and Monks: Prestige Class Preview

"These books are not all about the prestige classes. I am doing these in response to someone who, quite a while ago, asked what prestige classes would be in the books. This is less of a "Buy Me! Preview!" thing than a simple response to a fan's request."

Yeah, that's something that really struck me when I got into my copies of the 2 Books out so far. I just expected these to be just another set of Prestige Class Compilations, but they're really a whole lot more! I'm really looking forward to the next books in the series now.

Does anyone have a correct release date for this month's "Cleric & & Druids" and "Rangers and Rogues"? (For some reason, Sword & Sorcery doesn't seem to be posting any of its next S&SS books on its Release Schedule anymore, mostly just the Mind's Eye & WoD-type products.)

Also, the mention of the 'Psion/Psychic Warrior Book' -- A reality or just a hope at this point?

X-Mark,
No idea about the exact release date, but I'm sure it will be either September or October. As for the PG: Psion/Psychic Warrior, it's not a reality but it's a possibility IF these do well. But you are so right there's so much more to these book than just a collection of feats, spells and/or Prestige classes.

Estlor,

I'm sure yours will come soon. If they don't make this week, suggest you talk to Joseph Carriker, since he was kind enough to see to it I got my authors copies in a fairly timely fashion. I know the spell section was short but I'm glad to see a good selection in there. But I think the spells is the section I'd ignore first if I was a guy reading the books.

Well if you already have PG: Wizards, Bards and Sorcerers, get Fighters and Barbarians...since the other three haven't been released. ;)

Why you little tease ;)

I actually did think that this had been released already. Oh well Fighter and Barbarians it is them :D

Well, like I said, I haven't gotten my books yet so I don't really have a lot to add to the discussion.

I will say I did finally see the W/S/B book in the bookstore last night. I didn't really flip through it too much, I was just curious to see which of my spells were used. Two of them (Darkness Nocturne and Prelude to Day) made it, but what shocked the hell out of me was that, all total, there probably weren't more than 10 spells in a book about spellcasters!

I'll give S&SS credit where it's due - they didn't take the easy way out with these books.

That was actually a huge selling point to me. With the Relics & Ritual series the WS&B guide didn't need more spells. And you're right cramming it with tons of spells would have been the easy way out indeed. That said I do like the spells that were included (congrats).

Nope. Far as I know neither PG: Clerics and Druids nor PG: Rangers and Rogues have been released. When they are, PG: Paladins and Monks will be coming out probably a month after that. (So if these two come out on time in Sept, I'd say October for PG: Paladins and Monks,)

Seconded... The original release schedule (or, to say, the original revised release schedule) was to have Wizards, Bards, & Sorcerers and Fighters & Barbarians in late July; Clerics & Druids and Rangers & Rogues in late August and Monks & Paladins in late September. Now, convention season will throw that all out of whack but I'd be suprised if we don't see the next two by late September.

And I think Psions and Psychic Warriors is a possibility if these do well.

Mostly this was a long way of saying "what he said..." :)

I am of the mind that it's much better to have a few really good spells than to be crammed with a whole bunch of mediocre ones just to be able to put a little sticker on the front saying, "This book is CRAMMED with spells!!!!!!!! MORE feats! MORE spells!! MORE prestige classes! MORE MORE MORE!!!!"

In which case I tend to mentally go, "Oh, yet another book crammed with feats, skills, spells, and prestige classes." *shrug*

The fact that this one has a lot of *other* interesting stuff for once was the largest selling point for me outside of it being Scarred Lands material. Bard songs and the various ways for using them, the various ways of making a sorcerer seem unique, uses for arcane marks...these are the sorts of things when I heard about them that attracted me to this book.

So while I don't mind a few good spells and the like, I don't like feeling overwhelmed by them.

I guess what I'm really wishing is that my book will actually arrive soon. Grrr. :)

Eyrdnel,

Thanks for the support.

Bekkilyn,

Don't lose hope man. I'm sure you book will come soon. :) But I do agree 100% with what you are saying.

What's changed in the new Mithril Knight? I have one in my gaming group who will definately care.

Presumably, it's been changed to fit the criteria, "Why wouldn't I take this prestige class?" As is, a Paladin has absolutely no incentive not to take the prestige class, from the perspective of game balance and min/maxing. A Mithril Knight is superior to the Core Paladin in every which way, in every ability the Paladin can use, and then some, except for Remove Disease - which I don't think anyone is going to miss. Assume the changes are going to be a loss of a few abilities from the Mithril Knight. At least that's my assumption.

Or perhaps it's more the fact 3.5 changed the paladin so much that extra smites in the class become irrevelant. But that's just my opinion. We'll have to wait and see when the book comes out just what was done to revise Mithril Knight.
