Playing a Ranger

I too, like the option of taking a level or two of Barbarian. It adds a lot to the class, and since Wilderness Lore is a Class Skill of Barbarians, it doesn't take much away.

I'd suggest being a Half-Orc. Int & Cha really aren't that useful (although the Ranger has a lot of great class skills, and not too many skill points), and the bonus Str really helps a lot.

Another suggestion is to concentrat on Archery feats, so that you won't have to worry about not having a shield, and wearing light armor.

I would suggest taking the WF comp. Lbow if you are going to eschew further combat feats.
Also, since you are going with the shield expert, check out gloves of storing to swap between your bow and shield. That will give you a mele weapon and an AC bonus while you draw your on-hand weapon.

I agree with your decision to put the 16 into int. I am guessing that the other 16 is going to Dex. So, the last suggestion I have is to put the 15 into Wis. and then bump it to 16 at 4th, which will bump up some important skills, like Spot, Listien, and Wilderness Lore. Listen is a very good skill to have maxed; everyone seems to like dumping points into Hide and Move, but since people tend to favour Spot over Listen, Hide tends to be the beefier skill.

Edit: New York City—get a rope. Just kidding :D

If you're going to be in a plane crashing campaign, be sure to take a great favored enemy like outsider that will see heavy use. The single class ranger can rock and roll if they see alot of their favored enemy. Otherwise, they're low-powered, high-skilled fighters.
