Playtest Characters

So what does everyone speculate that the playtest characters imply?

Greg Bilsland's latest blog update lists the playtest characters that are going out:

Dwarven Cleric
Human Fighter
Elven Ranger
Eladrin Rogue
Tiefling Wizard

Apparently, they're using levels 2, 4, 6, and 8 of these classes.

Were I designing playtesting, I'd only playtest PHB elements ... so that would confirm those five classes and five races. I'm sure there will be more classes in the PHB ... might there be more races? Does the poor halfling get the shaft?

Of course, but there's only so many characters one can shove into a group.

Would have been nice to see how halflings roll, but I'm sure they're eager to show off their newfangled races.

Maybe those are the levels in which the classes gain their Class Abilities, or Talents.

If that is true these two really make me go...HUH?

Tiefling wizard...Eladrin Rogue???

Yes, but that's not really a surprise - the tiefling and eladrin were included in the preview images, after all.

I don't get it. Are you complaining that it seems to make more sense to switch the classes around between those two races? If so, I disagree. There's no real reason to "play to archetype" so strongly, and it may be that they want to be sure that those races' abilities complement those classes as well as the more "obvious" choices.

Plus, there seems to be a tiefling wizard on the cover of the Player's Handbook, so.

I agree, I'd be very surprised if any of those classes or races aren't in the PHB, especially because they've said the PHB is basically done (which I take to mean that the classes and races are no longer in flux).

Warlock and halfling are also pretty much confirmed for the PHB, which just leaves two classes and two races in question. Actually, now that I think of it, I can't remember any specific confirmation about halflings being in...

Do we actually have a confirmed race count? 'cause I can't remember anyone saying we'd have 7 races!

Fighter - Martial Defender
Cleric - Divine Leader
Wizard - Arcane Controller
Rogue - Martial Striker
Ranger - Martial(?) Striker
Warlock - Arcane(?) Controller(?)

(?) because we really haven't confirmed these (although all three seem really likely)

On the class front, we are down to the final 2. I'm betting Either Paladin and Warlord or Paladin and Sorcerer-as-Leader. The first gives us 2 divine, 2 arcane, 4 martial; the second a 2/3/3. Both would give 2/role, too.

Personally, I'm betting Warlord: Both it and Paladin have been played in playtest reports--but Sorcerer hasn't!

I believe it's confirmed that we'll have 8 races, but I can't remember where that's from. With 8 races, it would be:

Human, Elf, Dwarf, Eladrin, Tiefling, Halfling(?), +2
