Please help me, PHB / DMG only !

He is lv6......and he want to play as a swordman now.

Whatever, man. I'm trying to help him build Li Mu Bai in that top example, and the bottom suggestions are if he has the sword now. Sure, he'll have to wait to get certain goodies. Oh well. If you're taking an Exotic Weapon feat to use your sword anyway, than it does not matter when you are allowed to use all Simple & Martial weapons, so what's your point, Bearfs?

As to his sword being finessable, well, our world lacks Mithral. Work with your DM and see if he'll let you have a magically light sword (for which you'll need an Exotic Weapon feat, of course).

I don't think truesliver swords are count as lightweapons in core rules
Sunblade is your best friend

"Li Mu Bai "...It took me mintues to remember who is he
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" ,right?

er,I mean "real" swordsman not fantastic ones
"ki" means " Controlling the act or process of respiration. " to them
Sure, they can penetrate 5-mm glass with throwing needles
climb up 10m walls while running
and something REALLY fantastic

Monk4/Ftr2. You'll have enough skillpoints for stunts now and then, not so few hitpoints. Get good Con.

And get used to the thought that an armourless light fighter without strength will not be good enough to compete with other PHB builds.

Note that if you play an elf, you are automatically proficient with both longsword and rapier. So you could play a straight monk and still be able to properly wield a longsword. OTOH I don't know if an elf would fit the image of a chinese swordsman for you. Depends on your campaign world, I guess.

You know, I honestly don't see why, upon further reflection, you can't just go straight fighter. Your character doesn't need an official D&D level in Monk in order to consider himself a monk. You don't even really NEED skill points.

Tatsu, do you see anything you like so far? Give us some feed back or we'll have no choice but to attack one another!-- er, one another's designs!

Hi all, thanks for all the good suggestions. I’m reluctant to use levels of monk because it seems a waste to take monk then not use a monk weapon (and loose flurry / stunning / etc.). I kind of like the sorcerer angle, but I see this guy as more of a high-wisdom guy than a high Charisma guy.

As for special materials, there are none in this game, so no Mithral / Darkwood / not even Dragonhyde (except on the dragon).

Instead of a sorcerer / fighter, what about a cleric? If he takes the magic domain, can’t he use wands of mage armor and shield? Maybe an Elven fighter / cleric focused on Dex and a finessed weapon? Oh, Exp penalty, DOH !

As you can see, I still need help with this. Please keep the good ideas coming!

Thanks!

I want to make a PC which fits the “Chinese swordsman” style. Think “Green destiny” when you are making your mental picture. Little or no armor, sword as the primary weapon, speed and finesse over brute force.

At 6th level, it's a bit early to be walkin' up trees and flying through the air, but it's good to have goals :)

I'd say Human Rogue 2/Fighter 4
32 Point Buy +1 at 4th -> S:14 D:18 C:10 I:13 W:10 Ch:12

Feats (8): Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization, Dodge, Mobility, Combat Expertise, Combat Reflexes, Improved Feint

(Might also give due consideration to Iron Will, Improved Disarm... So many good feats.)

Skills: Get the most out of: Balance, Bluff, Climb, Intimidate, Jump, Tumble, Use Magic Device (plus a bit of Perform: dance if you wanna go Duelist or Shadowdancer later)

(UMD to make use of minor items - particularly buffs et al. Look for things like Jump, Longstrider/Exped. Retreat, Cat's Grace, Shield).

Down the road, give thought to Prestige Classes - particularly Duellist (Suggestions above are intended to help get you there), but also Shadowdancer has real potential... Maybe a bit of both. If you do go Duellist, the 8th level point increase ought to go to Int...

The key to this sort of character in terms of combat effectiveness is tactics . Make sure you're USING all the feats, skills, and special abilities to maximum potential (or select different ones tat suit you better). In terms of role-playing, you can definitely embrace the mystical, master-swordsman 'thing' and satisfy your 'Monk' cravings that way...

Happy Min-Maxing!

Don't underrate the Monk levels ...

2nd level in Monk gets you Evasion. 1st and 2nd level Monk give you Evasion, Unarmed Strike, Flurry of Blows, Improved Grapple (useful for when you get grappled), Deflect Arrows, and +3 to all your saves for 1 BAB. And you get more skill points than you get with fighter. I wouldn't take more than 4 levels in Monk - otherwise you sacrifice another BAB point. 2 levels in Monk totally seems worth it to me.
