Extra Slot [General]
REQ: Spellcaster level 4th+

You gain one extra spell slot in your daily allotment. This extra slot can be at any level up to one level lower than the highest-level spell you can cast. For example, a 4th level sorcerer gains either an extra 0 level or 1st level slot, allowing him to cast any known spell of the chosen level one more time each day. A 4th level wizard can prepare any extra 0 level or 1st level spell she knows. Once selected the extra spell slot never migrates up or down in level. Tome and Blood, pg 40.

As a sorcerer player, I gave this a 2, and that's being optimistic.
It's weak when it starts, since you can't use it on your highest spell level. It would only ever come into play when I used up both my highest and second-highest slots, which doesn't happen all the time. (And when I am pressed that hard, one more slot usually wouldn't make the life-or-death difference.) To make matters worse, it never scales up, so it becomes obsolete within two or three levels.

Now that I think about it, it'd probably be a bit more useful for a wizard or cleric, since he'd benefit from having a wider daily spell selection at that level. (Instead of walking around with, say, 1 utility spell that might or might not get used that day, he could have 2 spells useful in separate situations.) I haven't played a wizard though, so I'm not sure how significant that would be.

If it were altered to allow you to gain an extra spell slot in the highest level you can cast, then it would be worthwhile. There is a feat that does this in Ultimate Feats, I think. Basically, you would want this to give you an extra 2nd or 3rd level spell, which are the levels with the most numerous and best overall wizard spells.

Actually it's good for the classes that don't get that many spells to cast. Judging it by the Sorcerer class is possible the worst class to judge it by, the sorcerer class does not need this feat. It would be the same as judging Extra Spell by the Wizard class.

it still sucks for the not so many spells class. You end up in one of two sistuaitons.

1. you take it at a lowish level its useful for a bit, as you have few spells, but soon sucks because 1 you soon have plenty of spells and 2, its a crappy low level spell slot.

2. you take it at higher levels, nice i guess that you can now throw an exta 6th+spell or whatever but really you got tons of spells already, the benefit is minimul.

Or I suppose 3. some balance between ultra crap and crap you take it a mid levels.

While having an extra spell could be handy, the opportunity cost is too great. You could be taking metamagic or item creation instead of this. Blah.

I say it is a 'strong 2'.

The combination of only modest benefit and scaling to worthlessness is a deadly combo. Any spellcaster class would gain greater benefit from Scribe Scroll or Craft Wand, even Bards and Sorcerors. Heck, even Paladins and Rangers.

This would be an okay feat if they removed this sentence: 'Once selected the extra spell slot never migrates up or down in level.'

Such as it is, this feat is not really for sorcerors or bards, it is really best used by (NPC) wizards and clerics.

2 is being exceedingly generous. Caster classes get the equivalent of this feat free 2x every level. Non-caster classes get the equivalent every level. Why spend a feat you only get every 3 levels for something that has very tiny benefit. The gc value of this feat could be somewhere between 400-27200gc

I suggested an extra spell variant that gave one extra spell in every odd numbered slot the first time you took it and an extra spell in every even numbered slot the second time you took it. You don't get an extra spell of the highest level you can cast. It scales infinitely through epic levels and it might rate a "5" at best.

The extra spell known for sorcerors should increase the number of known spells at every level by 1 each time it is taken, also scaling.

I gave it a 2, to acknowledge that there are perhaps a (ludicrously rare) few character builds out there that MIGHT actually gain a fair benefit form this feat. However, I think those are "one in a million" characters. At best.

I might have given it a 4 or 5, if the spell slot gained would migrate upwards as you levelled, in a fashion similar to the bonus Summon Monster spell Alienists get.

It'd get an 8 or 9, if it did that, and your highest spell level could gain the extra slot.

But, it does neither, so it's stuck down at an "I'm feeling abnormally generous today" score of 2.

As for what classes to measure a feat for -- IMO, always measure by the class(es) in whose splatbook it was published in. This feat is in T&B, meant for sorcerors and wizards; it seems obvious they planned this for wizards.

In which case: FAUGH, just be a specialist, get a bonus spell of EVERY level, and be done with it.
