D&D 5E Plot Points from the DMG

Has anyone had any experience using the plot points from the DMG? Specifically the version without swapping DMs around. It sounds interesting but I'm worried it will slow play down significantly.

I haven't used it, but if I had my way I'd ask players to spend Inspiration -which is a limited resource- instead of unlimited Plot Points. They'll think twice before adding something to the plot for the kicks.

I've been using Paizo's Plot Twist Cards deck for a while now. It operates on a similar premise. I wouldn't mind trying out that Plot Points variant that involves swapping DMs mid-session, though. That could make for a totally cray-cray one-shot (wouldn't want to make a lengthy campaign out of it, though).

I've been using those plot twist cards for years. My players love them. In 5e, I give them out with inspiration, so a player can either use one to do what inspiration normally does or twist the plot in a way related to the theme of the card they're using.

It's been working great so far.

Reading that section – particularly the part about switching the DM midstream – reminded me of how my group started up our first 3e campaign back in Summer 2000. We all made up characters and ended up doing basically what that suggested, round-robining the DMing (this when only the PHB was out, having been released just a few days prior to the first session) so we all could run PCs for at least most of the evening each of the first few sessions (we eventually settled into two or three rotating DMs in a sandbox).

I can easily imagine doing the same thing in a group in 5e, especially through the first few levels. Beyond that, however, having always played in multi-GM groups, the idea of trading up DMs like that is probably my favorite 'module' in the book!

I was thinking of introducing a limited form of plot points by having a player force a roll on the something happens table from the dm screen. Whatever comes up becomes a new wrinkle in what is going on.
