Poisons in D&D

I guess I'm just a fan of not hindering PCs because of real life needs to versimilitude everything...

Or at least poisons. :p

It changes that- each poison has a different timeline for its effect(s).

No. All the poisons in it are real and I can't think of anything from the real world that acts like that.

I guess what I'm talking about would be more of a 'drug', really. (also, gingko does work like that -- the increased blood flow can improve memory, but also means that cuts bleed much more than they should)

Exactly. The rules make poisons too much alike, and they turn poisons into just another combat device.

...

It's unbelievable to me that the designers made ALL poisons in the core books take effect within 1 minute...

Some poisons are just better modeled using the rules on diseases.

There is a plan to release Bastion's Pale Designs: A Poisoner's Handbook in pdf format and updated to 3.5 rules in 2007. It's on my to-do list.

For the record, both Pale Designs and Justin's Poisoncraft complement each other quite nicely making them a killer combo. (pun intended) :)
