D&D General Polearm Mastery and the Versatile Weapon Property

If you have a fighter wielding a quarterstaff ( which has the versatile weapon property) and who has the Polearm Master feat, does the bludgeoning damage from the weapon's other end stay a 1d4, or does it go up to 1d6 because of the weapon property? I know that the quarterstaff when wielded in one hand does 1d6 and 1d8 when wielded in two hands. The Polearm Master feat doesn't say anything about how it might work with a versatile weapon property.

I like to think that because of the feat and the weapon property, the other end of the quarterstaff will do 1d4 with one hand and 1d6 with two hands. But expectations are one thing, and reality is another thing.

No, it is still just 1d4, not 1d6 because the staff is used with two hands. Many people cringe at the idea of the 1-handed staff getting the bonus action d4 damage attack, but that okay is according to the feat.

Note that a PC with the Great Weapon Fighting Style would get to re-roll the d4 on a 1 or 2 if used with two-hands due to the versatile property.

However, a monk using the quarterstaff could replace the d4 with their martial arts damage die, as it is a monk weapon and the "weapon's damage die for this attack is a d4.
