All the people I game we are at a very minimum potential friends. After a year of gaming together we are either friends or the game breaks up (or someone is dropped out).

Some of my group includes people I've gamed with for more than ten years; some it's been more like 5 years. Still, I rarely do social things with my gamer friends. But then I don't do a lot of social things in general, other than gaming. So it's really hard to say. They're not "send them a birthday card"-level friends or "I would help them move"-level friends.

With the groups where I'm the player and not the DM, it's even more on an acquaintance level. Good people! But not people I spend time with outside of gaming.

I used to game only with close friends, and friends of close friends; in theeastern part of L.A. County, there were few other options 1979-1997. Since moving to Seattle, I've been able to expand my play experience; weekly or bi-weekly home games with friends & family, plus regular & pick-up games with friends & acquaintances through RPGA. Very high ratio of play time to prep time for RPGA games... It's not for everyone but I like it.

Cheers,

The people I game with are my friends. While most of our social activities are gaming related, we do get together for movies or parties from time to time.

I would find it hard not to become friends with people I hang out with at least once a week (if not more often) doing something I really enjoy.

I had to go with option 1. The 2 people I game with now are my wife and my uncle. We do everything together; movies, gaming, trips, you name it!

My current group is made up of people I've known since '98, my freshman year of college. I probably wouldn't DM someone (or want to anyway) unless I liked spending time with them away from the game. I like to know the people I DM for.

My tabletop group is people I met through casting out nets for a game on ENWorld, but that was almost five years ago; they were strangers when I started playing with them, but they're friends now. Game night's pretty much the only socialization I do regularly, but if someone's throwing a party, I'll show up. :)

All the people I game with are the same group of friends I club, party, and do things with. We read eachother's LJs and go to eachothers b-day parties and would do so even if we stopped gaming.

My games are a mixture of old friends, newer friends, and even newer acquaintances.

I try to make it a point to help move everyone to the left in that equation, so I'm constantly trying to involve my newer gaming people in more activities with me and my other friends. Expanding the circle so to speak.

Heck, I still game with one of my *original* gaming group members from 1980... :)
