Poll: How do Illusionists compare, then/now?

The good ol' days of illusion?

  • I remember earlier D&D classes, and the Illusionist now is less attractive.

I believe that the specialist wizards in WotC don't have enough flavor. Honestly, why be a "specialist" when there aren't any real benefits, and why bother when only one or two schools are off limits?

I like the illusionist and evoker core classes that Fantasy Flight has created in its "School" books. I'm heartbroken (okay...exaggeration) to see that that series appears to have been abandoned. The classes look fairly well balanced (you don't automatically get item creation feats), and I've found that the illusionist at least seems to be really playable.
