Eh, whatever.

The only thing I find remotely strange about it is that it sometimes feels like people are really reaching in terms of the notoriety of the people that are listed there. On the other hand, it's also sometimes the first place I hear of some people's deaths, so I find it interesting.

paying sincere homage to the deceased who have touched our lives through their art or other accomplishment is a fine thing and worthy of the space on the forum and time writing and reading it. I've never seen anything rude in that thread so it is being handled appropriately.

I don't find it creepy at all. The thread is very useful to find out who is recently deceased in fields of interest I enjoy. Now if it were full of stuff like morgue photos, or bad jokes about the dead, I would find it creepy.

If taking your relative's dead body, putting it in a box, inviting people over to look at it, standing around talking about the dead person, and making a big production out of sticking it in the ground is normal, then the thread can hardly be called creepy.

Or incinerating the body, placing the ashes in an urn and then keeping it in your home.

I don't see anything creepy about listing the notable people who have passed away during the year.
