Since that link isn't immediately obvious (goes to top of page), I'll cite the relevant stuff (feel free to add to the OP if you like).

[Favored enemy] should not be focused. [No +2 to a given creature type or somesuch.]
Instead it grants features that can alway be helpful.

Favored Enemy: Goblin
Perception +3
Sense Cheating: The ranger are immune to bonus damage granted from advantage
Dealdy Surpise: The ranger deals 1d6 bonus damage when he rolls an initiative highter than 10.

Favored Enemy: Kobold
Find/Remove Traps +3
Mook Slayer: The ranger deals 1d6 bonus damage when outnumbered
Hold Breath: The ranger can hold its breath for a number of rounds equal to four times its Constitution score before it risks drowning

Favored Enemy: Dragon
Insight +3
Fearless: The ranger has advantage against saving throws vs fear effects
Maw dodger: The ranger has advantage against saving throws vs breath attacks

And I personally very much like it...sorta like 3e's domains, or pathfinder's bloodlines...it's especially useful against that creature type, but is useful for the character even if he never encounters that creature.

In the other thread, I proposed a modification, but Orzel's basic core idea is strong enough that I voted "Yes"...and would do so if used as is.

It would kinda turn the ranger from a ranger into something better called a nemesis, I think, if this is what defined it.

Nah...this has always been a part of what defined the ranger class, at least back to AD&D. It was just more narrowly constructed, limited to "giant class" creatures back then.

Some quibbles (kobolds should give you a bonus against traps, not holding your breath?), but yeah. It's a good idea. Complex, but not bad.

It DID give a F/RT bonus of +3. The notation on FE Kobold also included similar facility in fighting Trogs, which is presumably the primary reason for the holding breath thing. I suspect that someone may have also used Kobold traps that involved spores, gasses or drowning.
