My Barbarian/Sorcerer took a big snowy owl as his familiar. I really didn't look at the chart for familiars but I knew most of what was on it - I wanted to choose something that fit my character's background rather than be swayed by fancy abilities (although I did know about the Toad).

My barbarian background was from a clan called The Snow Leopords far up in the mountains. I couldn't have a Leopord but the owl was a great second choice (and surprisingly powerful too, oh well).

Anyway I love the familiars that were recently posted on the Creature Catalog - a 20hp Butterfly would be pretty neat!

Snowy White Owl ? You keep it close to you all the time yep ?

These Harry Potter like owl are too much of a target unless your campaign is way up north... stand out like a sore thumb...

(dont even talk about Toads... to pathetic to consider )

Are Snow Owls white during summer time? Considering many animals that turn white during winter are not white during the summer, it would not surprise me if the same was the case with those owls.

Toads rule

Toads are the best. Not only do they provide a wizard with a real benefit, but if you get the "good" kind, they are also good for licking.

In my last Planescape campaign, oddly enough I don't think either of the spellcasters actually had a familiar.

My beholder wizard has a raven familiar - useful since it can run his shop for him if he's run out of polymorph self spells.

In my new campaign, Acrozatarim: Fire and Ice, the sorceress is an apprentice Manipulator, basically a bio-thaumaturge, and has her own Manipulated familiar - a two-headed toad. The necromancer has a hedgehog familiar - good for the armour bonus.

I have an ice mehpit named "Still". I named him in homage to an NPC from another DM's campaign. The orginal Still was an ice elemental that stood about three feet tall and had a slight god complex. Twas a great campaign the mighty DM Panada wove and I will sorely miss it.

Since I voted other...

My Half-Orc Wizard 5 / Earth Elemental (1) Savant spent his 6th level feat to get an small earth elemental.

The earth elemental won't be getting very powerful since the Savant levels won't add to his power, but it fits the character concept perfectly.

And I've discovered it's very handy having a familiar who doesn't need to breathe.

My mute ranger/sorcerer has a raven. She helps him out from time to time if other people are too impatient to try to communicate with him. Speech, even if it is with a halting fowl accent, is better than none.

Low Light Vision

Realistically, ALL the standard familiars should have low light vision. If you wanted to really argue it, you could probably say they have darkvision too (60ft).

Monster's Manual, page 5:
Unless otherwise noted, animals have low-light vision.

That's for animals, but familiars are magical beasts, so a little further down the page...
Unless noted otherwise, magical beasts have darkvision with a range of 60 feet and low-light vision.

Therefore, all familiars should at least have low-light, and since they are magical beasts, they should have darkvision (60ft) as well.
