Polymorph ECL?

I have a wizard in my party who wants to be polymorphed into something stronger (either by someone else poly othering him, or permanency poly selfing himself)... He wouldn't get the Su, or Ex, or anything of the creature, but he'd get the average physical stats... Should I impose an ECL on him?

I say no, because he's using stuff at his own disposal to do so, and a dispel magic would screw him over...

And please don't answer with a rant about ECLs. I've been using them (always the newest version) for a long time now, and they work perfectly in my campaign. I just don't know if it's right to impose a polymorphed (or reincarnated, for that matter) character with it.

You should NOT boost his ECL. He's just using the tools at his disposal; would you boost a fighter's ECL if he got a +5, vorpal, thing-gummy-what sword? I don't think there would ever be a reason, in game, to raise ECL --- for me, it's at first level or not at all

Besides privateers excellent points:

With polymorph you don't get SU-abilities and only some if any EX-abilities(which are partwise a big reason for high ECLs).
With polymorph you don't get any Extra-HD(reason for ECLs)

Polymorph will vanish after a dispel-magic(or do I handle this the wrong way?).

A polymorphed wizard should absolutely not get an ECL modifier. No more than if he had used any ohter spell.

ECL's are not meant to be applied post-creation. It is a tool to make players of ordinary races not feel wronged by others making "smarter" character creation choices!

Nor would the wizard need anyone else casting Polymorph Other on him. The target for a Polymorph Other is "One Creature", and I am willing to bet that the wizard involved is just that.
Remember that he may also opt to forego his save, as always.

And like I said when I made this note, I don't think there should be an ECL, and I pointed out the same things you guys did.

So you helped justify my thoughts.. though the Poly Other target I never thought about. I'll have to tell him that.

Of course. The duration is permanent, not instant. If the wizard polymorphs himself into a form that can still cast spells, which would be wise , he can dispel the polymorph himself and succeed automatically.

Just remember to make him save or be disoriented. And remember that people now view him as a member of his new race. A bugbear may have great stats but the town guard might keep him out of town, and he might have to fight a lot of good people.
