D&D 5E Poor Old Mystic The AD&D Legacy Trampled On!!!!

'Psionics' are the mental equivalent of 'Bionics', that is, machines used to augment mental ability. For example, if you put a wireless network card in my brain, and a wireless network card in your brain, then we are psionic men. An example of this used correctly is the Telepath Corp in Gerrold's 'War Againt the Chtorr' (people with cloud networked brain power).

So, it never made sense to call D&D's native magical ability 'Psionic' in the first place. The class should have be 'Psychic'.

Mystic relates to contemplation of divine things, not possession of supernatural mental abilities.

They changed what was wrong... into something that's still just as wrong!!!

In all seriousness, I really do dislike the name "Mystic" for the psionics class.

And the mystic that Zardnar describes sounds like a great class. I've been wanting an armor-less priest class.

You don't need an entire class in order to simply not wear armor.

No, and you have offended the Ghost of Gary Gygax, who has roused from his eternal slumber to sic an ethereal mummy on you.

The REAL MYSTIC is a subclass of the cleric, as presented in Dragon Magazine #65. How do we know it's official? Because The Gygax himself wrote it, which means that it is, like, Supercanon or something.

Mystics loved them some divination. So a Real Mystic was all like, "Some day terrible interlopers will use my name for a Psion class, and it will go horribly for them. I curse them and their followers."
And a 1982 issue of Dragon Magazine is currently winning!

Do I hear 1981? 1981? Can I get a 1981 mystic anywhere? 1981?

In 3e the Mystic Class from 2e Faiths and Avatars became the Mystic Wander Prestige Class, which disappeared in 4e, but in 5e the second Favoured Soul UA is in many ways a Mystic, its unarmed, poor weapons, uses Charisma as a spell casting stat, and has a spell selection that includes a lot of spells like charm, divination, etc... That the Mystic 2e got access too.

You can even gain a familiar like the, Mystic did with a feat and with the right feat Rituals can act as a substitute for candle magic, and profiency in alchemy tools can replace potion making.

In fact the second version of the Favoured Soul has more in common in with the 2e Mystic then the original Favoured Soul.
