Among the people I know who know even a little about Spiderman, Venom is one of the top characters. I wouldn't say villain thought because he really isn't a villain. He's the "lethal protector", a good guy willing to actually kill bad guys but who has this irrational hate for Spidey. Makes a more compelling story than a guy with extra arms.
