I don't think people actually play with characters that maxed out. When you build something thats so centered on damage, you leave lots of openings in your defense. Say for example, the guy that could charge for 15,000-20,000 damage. If you got him with a high Will save spell or something like Forcecage, game over he loses.
I have had a cavalier that does like 200 damage per round at 25th level. But once again, his mount is incredibly easy for a bad guy at that level to kill. And yes... they did fight a duke of hell as the climax to the campaign, we always thought it would be fun to try just once. (it was

By the way Bryan898, you forgot to mention that close only counts in horseshoes, hand-grenades and Thermonuclear weapons!
No... if you miss with a thermonuclear weapon you should be kicked in the head... a lot.
