PrC and Spells per day

I was curious, some prestige classes offer "+1 level of existing class" when determining Spells per day.

My question here is, for sorcerers does this still increase their number of spells known? I would guess so, but it isn't clear anywhere that I can find. Please let me know if anyone has insight into this.

P.S. Sorry if this is a repeat question I don't seem able to search, and I didn't see it scrolling through various pages.

yes... it increases the number of spells per day, number known... and with a Wizard, it also gets you the 2 spells free when you level up.

Welcome to the boards by the way. ;)

Ahh, thanks!!

I thought it would work that way, but I wanted to make sure. Thought it would be odd if it didn't but to take the rules in DMG literally (at least how I read it) it wouldn't.

This brings up something that I've always thought was a little odd, to wit: sorcerers lose almost nothing by taking a prc (that gives full spellcasting advancement).

In general, there should be a reason to keep advancing in a base class (imho, ymmv). A wizard who takes a prc that gives +1 spellcaster level at every level loses bonus feats, f'rex. Fighters lose their bonus feats, or at least their flexibility in choosing bonus feats by taking a prc.

All a sorcerer loses is their familiar advancement- which is not generally a big deal (again, imho).

Anybody else find this odd?

Sorcerers and Bards have the least to lose it seems from multi classing into prestige classes that grant the +1 spellcasting level. It is a little odd, but I haven't found it to be too bad.

While they have the least to lose sorcerers usually find the knowledge and feat requirements for spellcasting priestage classes difficult to achieve.

Normally the PrC that a Sorceror is easily able to attain fails to offer +1 Spells per Day every level.

If a Sorceror can manage his way into a +1 Spells per Day every level, however, he has little reason to pass it by. It was this reason that made lots of people say that those kinds of PrC were unbalanced in the first place.

I think it works fine. Normally Sorcerors have to go through a lot to get into a good PrC.

I play a 19th level sorcerer, and he has had no reason to multi-class into a PrC. The ones that sounded nice had requirements I didn't want to attain (i.e. useless skills or feats a la Loremaster) and the rest just didn't sit right RP-wise (such as Alienist). I'm still looking for a good religous class to multi into. I was going to go Paladin for a level or two, but the guy that was training me just got ate by a demonic mask thingy and we don't seem to be able to bring him back.

Bards at least lose the extra uses of their bardic music, which can be VERY useful if you need to inspire whatever six times in a day.

A sorcerer really loses nothing at all, but the point about them really having to eat up skill points and feats is a good one.
