PRC Burnout (poll)

In a game you GM, do you allow PRCs?

  • Nothing better than a PC/NPC with 5+ stacking PRCs

    Votes: 18 21.7%
  • Maximum of one PRC per PC/NPC

    Votes: 43 51.8%
  • Rarely, only in special cases (Chosen One, etc)

    Votes: 17 20.5%
  • Never! PRCs are unbalanced.

    Votes: 5 6.0%

As others have said, I could not vote, there was no choice between 5+ PrC's each and a firm limit of one, maximum. I would permit a character to take more than one if it fit the character. On the other hand, most of the folks I game with generally do not look far enough ahead in planing their characters to ever qualify for any of the PrC's that are out there.

In general, I like seeing more PrC's than I can use, since that way I can pick and choose. Again, as has been mentioned, any book with new PrC's in it needs to make sure that the new PrC's add to the topic of the book, rather than just lay there.

I took your first option, but think there is just a wee bit of a dichotomy between your first and second option. I let PCs/NPCs have as many PrCs as make sense. In my rogues gallery thread (see this post) I have an NPC with three classes, but that's sort of a special case. I have one PC in my game with two PrCs - soul archer and fiend stalker.

I love PrCs. How could I create half my NPCs without them. Keeps players on their toes and allows u to create characters with wierd abilities that would be inappropriate for the core classes.

That said, your poll options are not very useful, so I'm not going to answer it.

I voted for "nothing better than 5+ PrCs", but really, the poll should have included an option between that and limiting PCs to one each. The poll options are badly lopsided and phrased in such a way to make it seem far more popular (and reasonable) to restrict access to PrCs.

It is called 'Biasing the Poll'. You are correct, most people use PRCs in moderation, neither limiting them to one only nor taking a huge stack of them. By leaving out the reasonable choice the results can be cooked to back up his premise.

Polls can be biased by how the question is phrased, or where the questions are asked. Much like a poll indicating that most Americans are against gun control - run in Rifle magazine... So I could run a poll here asking if people were in favor of role playing games, then use the results to show that most people polled were in fact in favor of them...

And yes, I also have no problem with the use of PRCs in moderation. They fill in niches that otherwise cannot be filled within the D20 rules. They are also very good for fleshing out your world. For example my world has a PRC called 'Master Gunner', specializing in the use of cannon, something not present in the main D20 rules set.

I've used for but then again I use what makes sense for the character...

As for being tried of them you have to have a certain amount of OG or your product won't be allowed to be published. I think allot of third party stuff is better than WotC so I'm hardly tried of them as I want my 3rd party books. :)

(I also didn't vote)

Geez, talk about biased poll options. The first choice is what I would expect most people to pick (yes I use PrCs, no there's no limit on how many a character can have - you know, the 'by the book' option) but it's worded in such a way to make it look like only munchkins would pick it. Reminds me of some of the anti-3E stuff on Dragonsfoot.

Here's another vote for something between your first two options in the poll. I can't vote on this as it is without misrepresenting things.

Not without? :D Yeah. Even my dislike for PrCs wouldn't make me conclude that ONE is definitely enough. Sometimes ZERO is enough and sometimes TWO or THREE are enough.

Well, my attitude about it kind of boils down to- I like prcs in principle (when well handled)... and I'm okay with the idea of a character with multiple prcs (there are a couple in my campaign, and Drelvin's prolly gonna end up taking levels of deepwood sniper as well as order of the bow initiate eventually)... but it can be overdone. I'm very tolerant of it, though- if a pc wants a character who's a little good at everything, why not? Like the ranger/rogue/cleric/assassin/contemplative/monk in my game, now 21st level.
