"Prestige" Classes (Not PrC's)

In the game and world in which you play, which classes haev the most prestige?

IMC, sorcerers, paladins and clerics are the top of the scale. Wizards are illegal in the characters home country, rogues are barely tolerated. Everyone else falls in the middle.

I can see worlds where Paladins are seen as Hooty-tooty and clerics as stuffy while rogues and rangers are seen as people of honor and taste.

What is up in your world as far as adventuring classes and societal preferences?

It depends where you are in the game world, but since the DM (me) has a soft spot for rangers, they tend to have a little more "umph" roleplay-wise.

In the general population, any individual who has grand and amazing deeds attributed to their name will have prestige. I think this is most likely to happen with the fighter classes, 'cause everybody loves a good sword fight.

Well, as the characters in my game don't carry a name tag listing their profession, this question is hard to answer. This is even more true, as these homeless people, running from village to village and plundering the local tombs and vaults, have not the best reputation to begin with ;).

commoners, warriors craftsmen most common
Fighters and rogues, most common of the npc & pc classes
rangers, barbarians and second most common, especialliy in the area we call Midguard.
Cerics, sages, bards, academics, nobles, would be next

Hard to say. There's no special preference based on class. Prestige comes from your deeds or maybe from your heritage.

rogues are barely tolerated.

Why are rogues barely tolerated? Is this the old "he's a thief, I don't trust him" thing?

They wear a yellow sign, one by two feet, saying "I'm a thief and I'm going to steal your wallet!" ;)

Ah, that was a good prank! Almost as good as drugging the elves wine and painting him black in his sleep :D
