Nothing's more annoying than hearing "go get the amulet; our kingdom requires it" for 3 game sessions, and then finding out who has it, hunting them down, killing them (amulet enhanced, of course), and then, just as you try to get said amulet, it turns out to be sentient with a fly speed.

Mistakes do happen that must be corrected. But why plan on making an egregious mistake on purpose such that the one must pull out the DM Fiat sledgehammer? Bad form.
