psionic warrior weapon specialization

the quote from the SRD say

On achieving 6th level, a psychic warrior gains the Weapon Specialization feat. The psychic warrior must have Weapon Focus with that weapon to gain Weapon Specialization. If the weapon is a ranged weapon, the damage bonus applies only if the target is within 30 feet, because only at that range can the psychic warrior strike precisely enough to hit more effectively. Psychic warriors gain Weapon Specialization as a free feat; it doesn’t count against the character’s bonus and regular feat acquisition. The character cannot take Weapon Specialization as a bonus or regular feat at any other level.

now can I save my specialization free feat for a later level, in case I do not have weapon focus or if I am not sure what weapon I want to take. I still want it as a free feat(who doesn't want free feats) I just want to save it.

now does the free feat count as a bonus or a free feat? if it is not considered a bonus feat then I should be able to save it for later use.

I always assumed the clause "The character cannot take Weapon Specialization as a bonus or regular feat at any other level" meant that it could only be taken at 6th level, period.

I can see that it might get banked, I suppose.

As a 6th level character, you get a Feat, so you could take Weapon Focus and get your free Weapon Specialization right away... or wait and do it later, getting Weapon Spec as soon as you take a Weapon Focus.

Clear it up with your DM though.

You have to be careful about banking feats, tho'. Sometimes it has hidden effects - for example, there are certain feats that a fighter is able to take one level earlier than a ranger or paladin due to the way the fighter bonus feats synch up with the 1:1 BAB progression. If you let the ranger or paladin "bank" their feats, the fighter loses this advantage - whether this makes the fighter weaker or just makes the ranger and paladin more powerful, I'll leave for you to determine.

So... are they any hidden side-effects of letting the psychic warrior bank bonus feats?

- Sir Bob.

P.S. Nih!

Banking a bonus feat is different from banking weapon specialization. When banking bonus feats, I require the PC to tewll me what feat they will choose with it or why they are banking it.

The wierd thing with Specialization is that it is one of the few abilities classes get that has a prerequite that is not automatically given by the class before hand.
