To reiterate, grace most certainly does end with an audible "ss" sound; if you pronounce it without that sound, you're effectively saying gras (fat) -- which does end with a silent "s" (well, silent as long as the following word doesn't start with a vowel...).

Actually, the users assume it's a play on the slang "phat", which is sometimes used as a synonym for "tight", but doesn't really mean the same thing. :)

"Yo, check it out! The way that Henry nailed that sleepin' ogre with a butterknife was PHAT!"

"Thas' right! It was a coup de gras! Aw, yeah!"

Yet, my assassination of the ogre was in fact NOT "pretty hot and tempting", but it was rather "tight."

Carry on.

I think our gaming group has a way of pronouncing it that should make everyone happy:

coup de grace - pronounced "kill shot"

Why are so many people suddenly deciding to make the "-ce" silent?
If I wanted to learn how to pronounce French correctly, I'd have learned French.

Instead I choose one of the following:
(1) Pronounce it as if it were an English word based on my intuitive knowledge of how to translate spelling to pronunciation in English. (Which is often wrong even in English. :))
(2) Pronounce it as I hear other English speakers pronounce it.
(3) If I suspect it is French, I only pronounce up to the vowel preceeding the last consonate cluster, as that seems a decent approximation to me. :)

my gaming group affectionately pronounced it:
"coop duh gracey!" with a twangy accent.
the original post is probably a TROLL! but not nearly a pseudonatural troll.
oh man. that remind me of when my gnome druid finally got to kill this one evil guy he really really hated. oh, he coop duh gracied him about ten times as a giant viper in his sleep. sooo sweet. who says you need a big combat to feel wonderous satisfaction!
