Question about scrolls, clerics, and arcane magic...

Not sure if that was a good trhead title, but to the point...

I'm pretty sure a wizard can use a wand of daylight that was created by a cleric, but can they use a scroll of daylight created by a cleric?

I've been told no, but I never had any proof/backup to that claim.

Any help would be appreciated. Also, a pointer to the rulebook/clarification. Thanks

The requirements for scroll reading are:

To have any chance of activating a scroll spell, the caster must meet the following requirements:

1. The spell must be of the correct type (arcane or divine). Arcane 2. spellcasters cannot cast divine spells from a scroll, nor can divine spellcasters cast arcane spells in this manner.
3. The user must have the spell on his or her class list.
4. The user must have the requisite ability score.

A Wizard cannot cast a spell from a scroll written by a Cleric.

Agreed re scrolls.

However, I'm dubious with regard to the wand. A look through my DMG was inconclusive - anyone got a definitive answer as to whether a wizard can use a wand made by a cleric?

DMG 175:
anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spelltrigger item that stores that spell

Doesn't mention arcane or divine, I guess a cleric wand can be used by a wizard

That is correct. A cleric can use a wizard wand, a wizard can use a cleric want as long as the spell is on the list of the respective user (or it's a Rogue with Use Magic Device).

To explain this you could examine the level requirements to make these things. Scrolls can be scribed by anyone, 1st level and above, whereas a wand needs a 6th level caster I believe.

So that is also something noteable.

from the SRD:
"Spell Completion

This is the activation method for scrolls. To use a spell completion item safely, a character must be high enough level in the right class to cast the spell already. If he can’t already cast the spell, there’s a chance he’ll make a mistake (see Scroll Mishaps for possible consequences). Activating a spell completion item is a standard action and provokes attacks of opportunity exactly as casting a spell does.

Spell Trigger

Anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spell trigger item that stores that spell. Activating a spell trigger item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity."

Spell completion = scrolls
Spell trigger = wands

Note Craft Wands has a prerequisite of Caster level 4+

Hope that helps,
Greg
