Question about Temporary Hit Points?

If a PC receives temporary HP from a spell, say Aid or Halo of Vengenge (from S&S, d20, 5th lvl Cleric), do you remove those HP at the end of the spell duration?

In other words, if a spell is cast that gives the temp HP, and they are lost in battle, do you have to pay the extra at the end of the spell, or are they just accounted for that first time? I know that if at the end of the spell if there are temp points left over they are lost, but I'm not sure if you have to account for each one.

Thanks,

Example from 3.0 PHB (Ch. 8, "Injury and Death: Temporary Hit Points", PHB p. 130):

- T starts with 26 hp.
- T receives an aid spell for 6 points: hp 32.
- T takes 3 points of damage: hp 29.
- T's aid spell expires: hp 26.

If you still have temp hp at the end of the spell duration, they go away. If you lost the temp hp over the course of the spell duration, you do not need to loose additional hp at the end of the duration.

The example dcollins put is accurate - note that the character does not go to 23 hp even though he lost 3 of his temp hp during the spell's duration.

(I think that's what you were asking :) )

Yeah, thanks, I thought that was how it worked.

When you gain temp points from a Constitution gain, and the Con goes away at the end of the spell/effect, you do lose the HP, correct?

Note that there's a difference between "temporary" hp (a la aid or vigor) and "extra" hp (a la barbarian rage or bear's endurance). The former works like a buffer that gets worn out before your regular hp, while the latter is fully removed when the duration lapses.
