Question regarding Ranger's Hunter's Quarry

"The hunter's quarry effect remains active until the end of the encounter, until the quarry is defeated, or until you designate a different target as your quarry." - PHB 104 ... does that mean that every round, with a minor action, a Ranger can designate the nearest new target with Hunter's Quarry? Am I reading that wrong, or does that make the method for designating the marked target effectively equivalent to how a Warlock marks their target with Warlock's Curse?

The method is the same, but the ranger can only have one quarry, whereas the warlock can curse multiple creatures over the course of the encounter.

The ranger can quarry several creatures over the course of an encounter too, only he can't quarry more than one at the same time.
