Quick Question about Multi Class Characters and Skill Points.

First Post
Hello All,

Just a quickee about How many Skill points should a multi classed 8th Level Fighter/ 5th Level Rogue human character with 13 inteligence have. Now I got it to be 121 points but I think that may be wrong. I was a little confused on how many points you get when you first enter the new class, eg. when I first picked up the Rogue Level, do I get (8+Int mod.) x 4 or just (8+Int mod.).
Any help much appreciated. Cheers All....;)

The latter.
The x4 multiplier only applies at character level 1-- when you're a brand new PC at the very beginning of your career. It never happens again, no matter how many other classes you take.

Your fighter levels give you 2 (base) + 1 (int) + 1 (human) skill points.
Your rogue levels give you 8 (base) + 1 (int) + 1 (human) skill points

If your 1st level was fighter, you get:

16+4+4+4+4+4+4+4+10+10+10+10+10 = 94 skill points

If your 1st level was rogue you get:

40+10+10+10+10+4+4+4+4+4+4+4+4 = 112 skill points

You get 4Xskill points only at character level 1.

HacknSlash - Keep in mind that the Fighter skill points can only be used on Rogue class skills as CROSS CLASS skills.

So you can't use the fighter class skills to beef up your Disable Device skill unless you want to pay double the price.

Likewise using Rogue skill points to beef up fighter skills... but the fighter gets so few skills, I doubt that would be a problem.

Thanks to all for clearing this up...

Thanks Guys,

My thanks to Auraseer, Maitre D and Murrdox for the quick replys and clarification of the skill rules for multi classed characters. Good point from Murrdox about the Fighter skill points only being used as Cross Class Points to beef up the Rogue Skills. Didn't think about that one....Cheers All. :)

I know that max rank = character level +3, but can he use fighter skill points to buy ranks in a exclusive skill?

Also, you should also keep in mind rank limits for your skills. See page 56 of the PHB. The bottom line is that levels in a class count toward your max ranks if the skill is not prohibited to that class. Otherwise, only levels in a class that is allowed that skill count towards max ranks. Max ranks is sum of levels for classes for whom skill is not prohibited, +3

So for a Ftr8/Rog5,

Your max ranks for Use Magic Device is 8 (5 Rog levels, +3) because Fighters cannot take ranks in the skill, so those 8 levels don't count toward the max.

Your max ranks for Move Silently is 16 (8 Ftr levels + 5 Rog levels, +3) because even though that's a cross-class skill for Fighters, it is not prohibited for them, so they count toward the max. Of course, you still have to pay 2 skill points per rank when you are using points earned from levelling in Fighter, because it is not a class skill for Fighters.

There are no skills that are allowed to Fighters but prohibited to Rogues. If there were, your max ranks for those would be 11 (8 Ftr levels, +3).

Cheers!

Once again, I find myself bowing to ENWorlders vast experience...

Well I have to say it...if you wanna know something about DnD, then all you gotta do is post it on this site and sit back and wait.
Fair play to all and thanks again to "Magus Coeruleus" for pointing out the skill point buying ratios for the different aspects of Fighter and Rogue skills. Didn't think of that one either....DOH !!! Need my butt slapped for that one.....;)
