Quick question hoping for a quick answer...

Hi all. I have a quick and simple question that I'm hoping can be answered quickly.

For a magic longsword with Shocking Burst, is the damage on scoring a critical hit equal 1d8+Str bonus+1d6(regular shocking)+1d10(shocking burst)? Or does the 1d10 from the burst just replace the 1d6 regular shock damage instead of being cumulative?

Thanks for any responses!

1d10 replaces the 1d6

i think i should clarify: that's the way my group handles it. the description does say 'functions like shock weapon that ALSO explodes...for 1d10 damage. this was a point of contention in my group, it may have been errata'd somewhere...

Bummer. Well, that's not what made sense to me but if it's the right answer then I guess I gotta take it.

Thanks alot for the quick response Mr. Fidget! :D

Seems like it would make more sense to just add an extra d6 of damage for each crit multiplier instead, but that's me I guess. Oh well. :(

The burst weapons do well only with a high crit multiplier (x3 or better).

Say you got a Heavy Pick 1d6 x4.

If you make it Burst then it does:

(1d6+ magic + Strength)x4 + 3d10.

Compare that to

(1d6+ magic + Strength)x4 + 4d6 Which is what you would have gotten if the 1d6 for flaming was just multiplied by the crit multiplier

That is the equivelent of an extra d6 of damage you get from their 1d10 method.

Burst enchantments are designed for HIGH multiplier weapons like the Pick, Scythe, etc.

[edit: tarkin, I do not believe the 1d6 is multiplied at all during a crit, it's just a d6]

From a Sage Reply...

If I get a critical hit with a burst weapon (such as flaming burst) do I deal an extra d6 and extra d10

Yes. (See the DMG Errata).

Or just and extra d10?

No.

From the DMG errata...

p. 186 and 188, Regarding “Flaming” and “Flaming Burst” descriptions on page 186, and “Flame Tongue”
description on page 188:
Flame Tongue is described as being a “+1 flaming longsword (+1d6 points
of fire damage with each hit) [that] is also a flaming burst weapon
(+1d10 points of bonus fire damage on a critical).”
CHANGE the Market price to: 18,315 gp
Also, REPLACE the quoted text above with:
This is a +1 flaming burst longsword (+1d6 points of fire damage with each hit, +1d10 points of bonus fire
damage on a critical; see flaming burst, above).

P.S. Sorry, but I'm not cleaning up that formatting mess. :)
