Quitting a Game...

I have been having loads of fun over the past 6 months playing D&D again. While Ive been big on theory, I've been low on practice. And now it's gone, as real-world pressures overwhelmed me and I had to bow out indefinitely. And it seriously sucks.

Anyone else everhave to end/leave a campaign that was going well?

I have not yet, but have been considering doing so with one of the campaigns I am currently playing in. Of course, I am playing in 2 campaigns and running my own, so bowing out of this one still means I am involved in the game - it would just be once a week instead of 2 times one week, and once the next, etc.

In this case (like yours) the campaign is going well too. Fortunately it has a lot of players (6).

All the time. My work gets busy in cycles, so it's not unusual for me to play for a few months, drop out for half a year, then jump back in for another half dozen games. Fortunately, my gaming buddies are a very tolerant and laid-back group. I would feel guilty about being so inconsistent if there were fewer players, but I'm actually the 6th player in the group, so they don't depend on me to be there for a quorum.

Yep-

I was living out in SF for a while and had a good game going on. Then my wife and I kind of decided it would be the best time to move back to the east coast, so the campaign was going to end in a few months.

Kind of felt like you have a show that suddenly gets word it's being cancelled. Now you have to decide if you want to just play a few remaining adventures, and leave things "unfinished," or try to "sum things up."

I tried to go the "sum things up" rought, and advance the timeline/levels to the end.... but then the finale never aired. :P

Have I stopped gaming from time to time? Certainly. With one exception, never for all that long a time - but yes, from time-to-time.

Truth is, at those times, it was because there were other things I was involved in that I felt were more important to me at the time.

I've seen more than one group shrivel up and die as the pressures of real life took on one player after another.

While I haven't had to bow out of any myself, the simple fact was that I was relieved when a couple of the campaigns stopped because it took away my having to make that decision for myself.

I had to bow out of three campaigns I loved.

First one - I joined the Marine Corps and went overseas.
Second one - I moved 700 miles away.
Third one - I moved and my commute is now 100 miles one way, getting home at 2AM wasn't good when getting up at 5AM to go to work again the next day.

Yes, sadly, many times due to being reassigned/relocated. Just going through that again now, in fact, as we move again next week. It's a drag, but that's life.

Eventually I link up with a new group, though my next job will be so busy/stressful I don't think I'll get started for a while.
