I tend to play humans, but the settings I play tend to have a wide variety of human ethnicities. I've played others, and quite enjoyed doing so, but it takes more work for me to come to an understanding of the culture I'm trying to portray. Still, when I put in that work, the result can be very satisfying.

As I DM mainly now, haven't played in a while as a char, but the last campaigns I've played in in past 10 years, i've played:

* elf
* minotaur
* centaur
* half-giant (Athasian)
* Yuan-Ti (modified to be weaker so it could start @ level 1 instead of it's crazy ECL)
* Lizardman (Athasian)

Humans first, but also Aasimars and Drow in 2e/3e and Dragonborn and Revenants in 4e. I just hate elves and dwarves (mostly because of some bad experiences with elf/dwarves in game...).

Looks like in this case, the outcome isn't really that suprising:

Human - Elf - Dwarf - Half-elf - Halfling - Gnome - Half-orc

How very much expected. :D
Only question was where the half-elf would be positioned.

I sincerely hope that the more exotic races of the past forty years are not left undersupported because of polls like this. It is true that there is a usual core of races (which should appear in the Starter Box), but I for one have often played human only because of the extra feat (and in the Fourth Edition, the extra at-will for a spellcaster).

Obviously humans the most but that's more of a "a lot of games I play in limit players to humans only".

I've probably played half a dozen humans, two tieflings, one aasimir/deva, 2 elves, and a drow...if I remember right.

A race doesn't have to be in the Core Rulebook for you to be able to play it. In my experience, it isn't too terribly difficult to add new races to fit your campaign for those rare occasions when someone wants to roleplay a kobold or somesuch. But it is a lot harder to remove a race from a campaign when it is printed into the core rulebooks.

This is why I hope they include 1d4+3 of the most popular races, and then put the rest into a supplemental book. Or better yet, a 5E version of "Savage Species," so that we have rules for roleplaying anything. I want a modular game that is easy to add things to...not a kitchen sink that I have to clean every time I want to cook something.
