I used to play half elf in 2nd edition, but mainly because he could be a bard of unlimited level...

I picked human. But I am getting fond of the Goliath. In my opinion he is the perfect match for the skald type bard I envision.

Just what is so interesting about playing humans? I do play them but it is one of the races I play the least unless it is a human only game.

Humans always make sense. If I'm basing my character on a fictional character, odds are the fictional character is also a human. I'm already playing a wily thief, a mighty warrior, a wise sage; those are interesting enough without needing to give them strangely shaped ears or funny skin color.

I don't think many people play any races because they are interesting. For me, the choice of a characters race and gender is always pretty much determined by the kind of person I want to play. When I have a concept in mind, there usually is only a single race and gender that really makes it work.
I don't think I've ever made a character with the intention of exploring the culture of the characters race. That happens when you decide on where the campaign will take place. When you play in human lands, your elf or gnome character will only interact with members of human society.
