Ranger Question?

I have a question about the Ranger's Improved Two-Weapon Fighting feat. The PHB says " A ranger with a base attack bonus of at least +9 can choose to gain the Improved Two-Weapon Fighting feat...."
Say I have a 1st level Ranger/ 8th level Barbarian. His Base Attack Bonus is +9 and he is a ranger, so does he get the feat?

I'd say no... You'd have to be a 9th level Ranger to get this class benefit.

People are already taking one level of Ranger for 3 feats... don't let them get by any missed prerequisites of Improved Two-weapon fighting for one level.

It doesn't say you can't... but don't give in.

Be a strong DM!

I'm inclined to say no. If it said, "A character with a base attack bonus of +9...", then I would say yes. As it stands, it says ranger. When you multiclass, your separate classes have their own base attack bonus, regardless of the fact that you add them together to get the total for the character. In your case, your ranger only has a +1 base attack bonus.

Other DMs might give you more breathing room than me, though. :)

guys read the feat:

from the SRD

Improved Two-Weapon Fighting [General]
Prerequisites: Two-Weapon Fighting, Ambidexterity, base attack bonus +9 or higher.
Benefit: In addition to the standard single extra attack the character gets with an off-hand weapon, the character gets a second attack with the off-hand weapon, albeit at a -5 penalty.
Normal: Without this feat, the character can only get a single extra attack with an off-hand weapon.
Special: A ranger who meets only the base attack bonus prerequisite can gain this feat, but can only use it when wearing light armor or no armor.

It is not a Prerequisite to be a ranger to get ITWF, but a ranger can get this feat because technically he doesnt have the feats Two-Weapon Fighting nor Ambidexterity.

From SRD
When wearing light armor or no armor, a ranger can fight with two weapons as if he or she had the feats Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting. The ranger loses this special bonus when fighting in medium or heavy armor, or when using a double-headed weapon (such as a double sword).

No where does it say Rangers have AMBI or TWF. So ITWF has a special that says a Ranger can get it with a BAB+9. Since BAB prereq is already +9, its just saying A Ranger/Whatever must have a bab +9 to get it (or just straight ranger).

Oh, I'm not saying he couldn't take it. I'm thinking he wouldn't get it for free.

Certainly, even a 9th level ranger wouldn't get ITWF for free, but he would still have access to the feat with BAB +9. As I recall, his abilities, while not technically the feats themselves, can be applied to the prerequisites of any other feat he takes, which would make ITWF available to him, but, as with his abilities, only in light or no armor, and two weapons, not a double weapon. I know I read this somewhere, but can't remember where. Therefore, he wouldn't need to have a BAB +9 as a ranger to have access to the feat.

EDIT: quick clarification

all it means is that the virtual two-weapon fighting feat that rangers get counts as the prerequisite for the ITWF ... as long as the ranger is wearing light armor ...
