Deos nods his head in agreement with Lupic. "We should be off, my friends." He turns to Debra, "Thank you for your delightful hospitality, dear lady. May the blessings of the gods be upon you." At that, he returns to the wagon, eager to head out.

Knight Otu12-29-05, 08:23 PM
"Indeed we should." Semabin then turns to Debra and says "May the winds spread the stories of your hospitality and of your splendid meals."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar12-29-05, 08:46 PM
At Kyle's request, she sends for a small basket of rolls, really just enough for a snack on the way. "Here you are. Have a safe journey and stop by on your way back. You will know the turn to Apple Glade by a large old oak on the east side of the road. Take the path east and its another 10 miles or so."
The party sets off, full from an excellent noon meal. They pass a small wood to the north east of the road. The road grows steadily more hilly and the surroundings more wooded. The sun is nearly to the horizon when the party spots the large oak that Debra spoke of. A dirt trail continues past the oak to the north east, just barely wide enough for the party's cart. The winding trail will not slow down their overland travel, but if they have to run for it, they may have to abandon the cart as the path is winding and trees grow up near the trail on both sides.
A small wood sign is planted on the side of the path. Its old and the painted message is almost completely worn out. The group can only decipher a few bits of it.

"Nah, I don't think so. The sign's so old, whatever that dangre might have been, it should be gone by now.

D20Dazza12-29-05, 11:23 PM
Feeling a little apprehensive after seeing the sign, and with the country ride feel of the venture seeming to have gone from the air, Kyle seeks solace in the rolls provided by Debra, absentmindedly chewing while he watches the trees for any sign of ambush.

"Nah, I don't think so. The sign's so old, whatever that dangre might have been, it should be gone by now.
"Perhaps you are right, good Semabin. At any rate, given what we are suspecting Klosterman of, caution would still serve us best." Deos urges the group to continue forward, and he carefully examines their surroundings as they progress along.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar12-31-05, 10:19 PM
The group makes another mile or two before the sun completes it's descent. The group guesses it is another 8 miles to Apple Glade. Do they press on or make camp? If making camp, is the group looking for anything in particular for a campsite?

While Semabin isn't quite sure about Kyle's ability to see in the dark, he thinks pressing on in the dark is exciting!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IcyCool01-03-06, 05:22 PM
"Well, if we are going to press on ahead in the dark, I'm going to get a little rest in the back of the wagon. I'd recommend that we light a few torches and hand them out to those who can't see in the dark."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar01-04-06, 12:53 AM
Deos retires to the wagon, while Semabin and Fenwick light (let me know if either of you would rather not light torches and I will edit accordingly). Semabin impatiently leads the way, peering into the darkness passed where his torch shines. Fenwick is right behind him while Lupic brings up the rear (again, let me know if you'd like it different).
A half hour passed after the sun has set, trees closing in around the narrow path.
Fenwick:
Thanks to his low-light vision, Fenwick notices a tree branch move and for just a moment sees a shadowy form disappear into the night around 20 paces away to the right side of the road.

Do you continue on, investigate where Fenwick is pointing, or something else?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IcyCool01-05-06, 09:02 PM
Deos scans the darkness, trying to see any moving shapes. Not seeing anything, he says, "We should investigate." More quietly, he whispers to his companions, "It might be bandits, be careful."
Having said that, Deos moves his hands over his forearms and intones, in auran, "Shohoneth halthey."
Then he loads his crossbow.

Tying the cart horses quickly to a tree, Lupic and Semabin lead the rest into the trees to the right of the road (where Fenwick pointed).
No one sees or hears anything (low rolls) until a giant spider web flies from the darkness 10 paces ahead, but unfolds too quickly just as a breeze picks up and falls short of entangling Lupic.
The enemy wastes no time mourning it's failed attempt to ensnare Lupic and throws another tangled mess at Deos, entangling (

He is frozen for a moment in horror, and then begins wracking his brain to try and figure out just what that thing was as he attempts to slip out of the web.
OOC: Escape Artist +0, if you please. Also, Knowledge Arcana +11 or Knowledge History +4, in an attempt to figure out what the beast was. Ettercap, or just monstrous spider? Notable weaknesses? Notable Defenses?

OOC: Lupic is not close enough to attack since his speed is reduced by armor. Does he wish to attack or grapple? Deos does not recall anything regarding this type of creature, his studies focusing in other areas. Spider's are Knowledge (nature) and Ettercaps are aberrations, which is Knowledge (dungeoneering). The last seems inappropriate so I'd say it also falls under nature as well. And feel free to make any rolls on invisible castle.

I'd say we camp off the road. It would be impolite to dig a firepit in a road.

The group camps near the road, but a little off to the side, building a fire. Kyle tugs and drags the ettercap's body over near the fire. The body is close to six feet high and weighs nearly 200 pounds. He is red faced, his great lungs working like a bellows, and an ache has developed in his lower back, but at last the task is done, and the real work begins. With such large prey, he is able to select (1d20+5=24) (

The meal is thick and pungent, but an enjoyable flavor for those who are not too picky. The night passes without incident and the party is back on the road shortly after sunrise. They pass a bend in the path just before mid-day the woods end abruptly in cleared fields and a small town nestled between the ridges of two hills. Farther past the town are the apple orchards that give the town it's name.
The largest structure, on the north side of the town, stands a cider house. A small spring flows down from this building through the center of the town.

Deos and Kyle set of to the cider house. While walking through town, Deos and Kyle attract a fair amount of stares, especially Kyle. The men at the cider house ask what merchant company you are from. They offer tastings to merchants, but not to anyone who would be buying for personal use only. The smallest quantity they sell is a 5 gallon barrel (for 8 silver pieces) of cider or a 1 gallon cask of hard cider (for 3 silver pieces). The cider house is built over the spot where an underground stream becomes an above ground stream. The water is extremely pure so the manager tells you and it takes the best water to make the best ciders. (DM license, this is probably not true)
Semabin and Fenwick take a tour of the the town. They also attract some stares. It seems that strangers are noticable since Apple Glade is not really on the way to anywhere. There is a small inn, where traders spend the night when picking up shipments of cider, a small blacksmith shop, for providing horse shoes to traders picking up shipments of cider, and small homes, for housing those who work in the fields or orchard or cutting timber. Not much else to speak of.

Kyle addresses the apparent leader of the cidermen "Why no merchant company my friend, we are not currently enaged in any mercantile exploits" he says a tear seeping from the corner of his eye as he takes a deep breath and smells the pungent odour of brewing cider "We have a much grander sheme a foot my friend" he continues with a satisfied grin "We're on a mission for God, a holy pilgrimage of sorts. I'm a priest of Geoth, now how would you like me to bless your brewery eh? Give it Geoth's blessing for that little bit of added goodness? eh, what do you say my man? I'll do the blessing, I'll need a jug of ale to splash around as I bless of course, and you keep my friend here company" as he finishes Kyle digs into his robes and flourishes his God's holy symbol, a large pendant of a frothing mug on a chain of gold.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar01-18-06, 02:13 PM
"We would appreciate the blessing. Do you have a cask of ale? If not, you'll have to give it a go without."

"I haven't got any ale I'm afraid my good man but, how about I buy a sample from you?" the dwarf says in a rush, his florid jowls bouncing with each word "The blessing won't be complete without the cider. And I've heard such good things about your brewing prowess. Why, your ale is the talk of the land. Look" the fat dwarf says as he digs into a belt pouch and holds out his pudgy hand, in which is nestled 4 gold coins (covered in flour and spices) "How about it eh?"

Deos watches the proceedings with a bemused grin on his face. While the priest of Geoth goes about blessing the Ciderworks, Deos steps over to quietly speak to the man Kyle purchased the cider from. "A blessing from a priest of Geoth, a fine thing to be sure. But we do have other business in town. We are looking for an able caravan guard mentioned to us by the proprietor of an inn up the way. Klosterman was the name she mentioned I believe, Karl Klosterman. She said he was quite the local hero. Have you heard of him, or know where we may find him?" Scanning the town, Kyle sees a tiny Lupic in the distance, looking bored. Not a single person has tried to give him trouble. Kyle can not see the others.
Semabin: Semabin makes his rounds around the villiage, talking to various people and asking about Karl Klosterman. It appears Klosterman was in town recently, but is not there at the moment. After about half an hour, Semabin notices that he has seen the same man in a brown tunic and dark green cloak several times. The man is now walking away from Semabin, though there is nothing supscious about the manner of his walk.

"Yes friend Deos we should, I have a hankering to provide the cook at the Inn with some of Geoth's money" he says with a grin "It's well past eating time and this fine cider has given me an appetite, well has increased my appetite" with a wave and a nod of appreciation at the cidermen Kyle ambles towards the Inn.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IcyCool01-26-06, 04:14 PM
Deos chuckles and wanders over to the Inn. If he can, he tries to get a seat where he can watch the wagon for the arrival of his companions. If not, he'll relax outside the Inn and watch the wagon and town until his companions arrive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar01-27-06, 08:26 PM
Deos and Kyle meet back up with Lupic and head for the inn. The inn is small, but the large stableyard for keeping wagons and carts reveals that peddlars and merchants make up the bulk of those who frequent the inn. However, there is only one other wagon in the yard today. A stable hand assures them he will take good care of their horses.
Inside, Deos, Kyle, and Lupic find a few patrons eating lunch while taking a midday break from their various chores. The innkeeper, a wide man (though nothing like Kyle) in an apron, welcome's them from behind the bar saying, "Hello! Come in, have a seat. What will it be today gentle- cough, ah, men?" That last stutter being caused by his catching sight of Lupic as he ducks his head to avoid the low handing decorations over the door.

Kyle waddles straight up to the fat barkeep digging into his pocket as he goes "Good day, good day" he says effervescently, extending his chubby hand in greeting "By Geoth's Belly I'm starving sir, and I'm quite excited to be in this fine establishment. Here, here" he says as he opens his other hand showing 6 gold coins sitting upon the podgy flesh "Here's a gift from Geoth's purse, and all in exchange for some food and wine for myself, and my friends" the fat dwarf says heartily "It is good to see someone who so proudly shows Geoth's boon" he continues with a smile, looking down at the man's belly and patting his own.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar01-28-06, 03:47 PM
He pats his own stomach, "Well, I eat my own cooking." Eyeing the coins, the innkeeper says, "You and your friends have better have a healthy appetite." He brings out the inns best wine and a couple trays heaped full of various meats, vegitables, and potato dishes, along with three empty plates. "Enjoy," he says with a smile.
Fenwick and Semabin meet the rest of the party at the inn. Everyone seems to have heard about the same thing, that Karl Klosterman was in town recently, but is no longer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D20Dazza01-29-06, 02:23 AM
Kyle looks down at the food, crosses his chest with his fingers and then clutches at his holy symbol "May Geoth bless this food and drink; That we his humble servants eat; Thank you your eminence for the fodder; And, pardon me for the bother." Deos digs in heartily, and between thoughtful mouthfuls of food, he ponders to the group, "It seems to me that we are left with a few possibilities. Either Klosterman is really not in town, or he is, and the people around here are unwilling to say. If he is out of town and is who we are looking for, then obviously we know where he's gone to. In which case we should hurry back to escort our client. Either way, we should ask around a bit more and see if we can find out just where Klosterman has gone."
Deos motions the innkeeper over and asks, "This is truly magnificent food, my good man. At any rate, as you may have heard we are looking for a local man by the name of Karl Klosterman. We've heard that he's quite the skilled caravan guard. Sadly, it would seem that he left town just recently. Do you have any idea of where he might have gone? Or do you know of anyone who might know?"

D20Dazza01-31-06, 08:19 AM

Semabin eats with great appetite and joy, showing only a little more restraint than Kyle, ignoring food he knows being hot (as in pepper). The innkeeper basks in the glow of everyone's complements.
Not in the Halls of Geoth perhaps?
"No, but I am a devotee none the less."
Do you have any idea of where he might have gone? Or do you know of anyone who might know?
"Well, I saw him two days ago. That's great that you are looking to hire him. He's been a little down on his luck lately." He pauses to gage your reaction.
Just as he pauses, two men walk in the door. One Semabin notices as the one who he kept seeing in town. They take up a seat on the other side of the room. The innkeeper bustles over welcoming them in and calling them by name, though only Kyle catches that their names are Jim and Bert. He retrieves a couple of mugs of ale and drops them back off.

D20Dazza02-06-06, 07:28 AM
Kyle turns and notices the two men looking at the party "Ahhh I see you like the look of our spread?" he bellows to the men, indicating the feast laid on the table before the party "Geoth loves to provide so please come and join us with Geoth's blessing" the fat dwarf beckons the two men over with a subtle wink at Deos.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar02-07-06, 09:54 PM
The two men look at eachother, clearly unsure what to do next. After a second passes, one of them stands and walks over to your table, the other quickly following. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D20Dazza02-08-06, 09:46 AM
Kyle beckons to the innkeeper "Two more plates for our new friends" he says as his fat 'cousin' appears from behind the bar "Well most recently we've come from Orussus, you ever visited the place? You should if you can, make an effort to get out there. If you do be sure to visit the kitches of Geoth, some of the finest food you'll ever taste" Looking up as the innkeeper arrives with the empty plates the fat priest continues "Not as good as the food here but a little more variety. You really must give me the recipie for this" he says to the innkeep as he starts to ladle food onto first Jim's and then Bert's plates.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar02-09-06, 03:30 PM
"Yeah, we've been there a time or two. What's the news in Orussus?" The two dig in to the meal before them, taking a moment to chew while awaiting Kyle's response.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D20Dazza02-10-06, 08:08 AM
Kyle warms into one of his favourite topics other than food, gossip "Well. Where to start? The Widow Brakus is pregnant, now that caused quite a stir that did. Father Kelith has been missing from his parish for almost two weeks. Some say he has gone mad while others suggest he has run off with Goodwife Flet who, as you might have realised, is also missing. Klosterman is said to have turned traitor and assisted bandits in ransacking his charge. A mysterious stranger in scarlet was seen loitering around Lady Helios's mansion and, apparently, there's someone stealing money from the Wishing Well." he looks prepared to say more but stops to take a bite of food and slurp down a drink.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar02-11-06, 06:16 AM
You (all) notice Jim's eyes tighten at the mention of Klosterman. Bert's breath catches in his throat at the same. An awkward silence falls while Kyle takes a bite. After a moment passes, Jim asks, "What was ... that about Mr, ah, Mr. Klosterman?"

Semabin downs his drink, trying to give the indication that he doesn't believe anything that Kyle just relayed.

). In my table top adventures, I don't like to force the action, instead letting the players feel their way through things and just trying to make the world react when they poke it. Mind you, I don't know the man and as long as he doesn't rob me who am I to say what he should or shouldn't do. More food?" he asks the two men.

Bert says, somewhat softly, "So you are looking for him."
At the same time, Jim talks over him and says, "Well, I don't know where the rumors started. Ehm, and I certainly don't know where Klosterman is."
With that, he drags Bert to his feet and says stiffly, "We'll need to be going now."
OOC: At this point, they are standing up but have not yet left the inn.

Knight Otu02-23-06, 07:28 PM
"I'd have loved to talk with Klosterman at some point, and since we were here anyway... but since he isn't here, I guess I'm out of luck."

"Um, yep, guess so. Bye," as they walk off.

As the men leaves Kyle reaches for their plates and removes the freshly ladled food "Well no skin off my nose whether I find him or not, I was just going to do the bloke a favour and help clear his name. Say, why don't you let him know about this rumour doing the rounds" the fat dwarf priest calls out "that way I can get on with doing something important instead of trying to be helpful to a total stranger"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar02-27-06, 09:12 PM
The two men continue out the door.
OOC: What's next?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D20Dazza02-28-06, 08:53 AM
Kyle leans across the table and whispers to his companions "OK, who wants to follow them? They may very well know where Klosterman is and go and warn him that people are sniffing around" the dwarf takes a long pull from his ale and then continues "Unfortunately sneaking and hiding is not my area of expertise so I'd best stay here and finish this off" the last said with a sweep of his hand over the food and drink still resting on the table.

"Best I not go, me kind of easy to remember and see" responds Lupic.

"I'm not exactly adept at skulking in the shadows," Deos says, "But we should make haste with whatever we plan to do. We'll need to leave town today or tomorrow if we are going to make it to the ransom location in time."
Deos glances at Fenwick and Semabin. "Do either of you feel up to the task of following these men?" His eyes scan over his companions before landing on the hulking form of Lupic, "Or should we try more ... immediate methods of persuasion?"

"You want me to rough them up? That I good at." responds Lupic eagerly.

"Huh? I guess I could follow them, but probably not unnoticed... Fenwick?"
(That would be alot easier if he was still with us...)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar03-02-06, 08:26 PM
Fenwick responds, "Well, I might fair a bit better than some of you, but I'm not the greatest sneak in the world either. I can give it a try, but if they spotted me I might be in a heap of trouble."
OOC: Fenwick is not actually trained in Hide or Move Silently or Spot. He gets a few bonuses for being small, but is not particularly adept at stealth. Too bad this group couldn't pair up with the Dance of Souls crowd.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Knight Otu03-02-06, 11:12 PM
"Aren't you small folks all good at that sort of thing? At least that's what I heard...?"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar03-02-06, 11:37 PM
"Better than most big people, but only a little and now's no time to discuss it. Should we follow by stealth or use *gulp* more expedient means?"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IcyCool03-03-06, 02:51 AM
"Well, at the risk of making ourselves unwelcome in this town, I think that a more expedient means is preferrable, given that that is where the talent of our group lies. Besides, I'll take the safety of a child over the friendship of a town any day." With that, Deos gets to his feet with an uncharacteristicly grim expression. "If we are agreed, then I suggest that Lupic do the honors."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar03-03-06, 03:25 AM
The party steps outside and sees Burt and Jim 80 feet down the street. They are walking quickly, but not running.
OOC: So is everyone running out to catch up and Lupic will charge and knock one of them out without saying a word? Are you going to threaten them first? Everyone hangs back except for Lupic? Go ahead and roll initiative with your next post.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D20Dazza03-03-06, 07:08 AM
Kyle grabs what food he can and stuffs it in his backpack, picks up a half empty bottle of wine, drops another gold coin on the table and nods a hearty farewell to the Innkeeper "Geoth's blessing upon your house good sir. A fine table you set. I'll be back sometime" with that he casually saunters out the door, following slowly in his friends wake.

Unless someone suggests otherwise, the Lupic trigger has been pulled and he's going to get one of them, without and prior steps. If instructed, he will attempt to intimidate instead.
I don't recall the rolling mechanism again, so if you could take care of that I'd appreciate it.

Initiatives:
Initiative: Semabin, Fenwick, Deos, Kyle, Lupic (1d20+3=14, 1d20+2=6, 1d20+0=10, 1d20-1=7, 1d20+2=3) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=379207)
Semabin: 14
Deos: 10
Kyle: 7
Fenwick: 6
Lupic: 3
Jim and Bert do not appear to have noticed you step out of the inn.
OOC: I am officially confused on how armor spikes work in a grapple. The armor spikes description says they deal "extra piercing damage" in a grapple. So does the 1d6 replace the 1d3 a normal person does or is it 1d3 non-lethal and 1d6 lethal piercing? If no one knows, I'll go with replaces. Second question, can you make a non-lethal grapple while in spiked armor? I'll say yes (with 1d3 base damage) if no one knows. I also noticed there was no healing performed at the end of the ettercap combat, but Kyle had plenty of spells so I will assume everyone is fully healed.

"Urr, yes, me not kill, just make agreeable" responds Lupic quietly before he rushes one of them into a grapple.

SlagMortar03-07-06, 01:29 AM
Upon exiting, Jim and Bert began walking down the main town road. The party hustles after them and manages to close nearly half the distance when Jim happens to glance back. He slightly stumbles and bumps into Bert causing them to react slowly to the situation. Unfortunatly, Lupic catches a loose cobblestone just as he is getting ready to sprint in for the tackle.
OOC: Initiative 7 for Jim and 5 for Bert. Above is just IC explaination for initiatives. Semabin, Deos, and Kyle notice that Lupic is not going to have time to close before Jim and Bert get to act. Actions?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D20Dazza03-07-06, 08:43 AM
Knowing that he stands no chance of catching the two men, and not forgetting the fact that running is undignified for a priest of Geoth, Kyle calls out to the men as they turn "I apologise for following you but it seems that my hulking brute of a friend over here" he waves a hand at Lupic "Wants to have a chat, I told him he had ample opportunity over lunch but, well, you know barbarians" he finishes with a smile.

"I think you lie to me little man. I don't like when I am lied to. You want to talk again or do I have to not talk with you? People not like it when I stop talking. "
We'll try that as an intimidate check.

Jim and Bert pause for a moment at Kyle's words, but at Lupic's words, they decide their best chance is to high tail it out of here. They are clearly intimidated, but probably not reacting quite the way Lupic had hoped (failed intimidate roll).
Lupic, Kyle, and Fenwick are quickly left behind assuming that you chase after them.
OOC: Basically, everyone delayed until Lupic's turn and so we are back to the top of the initiative order. Jim and Bert are 50 ft away and about to take off running, but since they paused that will not happen until their initiative since they paused to hear what the party was saying. You can run at times x4 speed for # of rounds equal to constitution. Semabin and Deos have a chance to close or cast a spell before Jim and Bert move. What do they do?

Semabin and Deos have a chance to close or cast a spell before Jim and Bert move. What do they do?
"Wait! We are simply here to get the little girl Klosterman kidnapped back. Without bloodshed, if possible."
OOC: Sadly, in Deos' case, he does very little. There's no reason to apply lethal force (we don't know just how they are involved), and Deos didn't memorize Charm Person today...
Diplomacy +0 maybe?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D20Dazza03-09-06, 11:22 AM
Kyle waddles along behind the rest of the group as they follow the two men down the road "Nothing to see here" he says to the crowds of villagers that start to gather and watch the bizarre procession "Just a simple misunderstanding. I'm sure there won't be any real trouble, they're all sensible lads"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SlagMortar03-09-06, 03:00 PM
The two continue running without even a start at Deos's words, giving the impression that this newest bit of news may not have been entirely unknown to them.
Fortunately for the party, there is actually little commotion. It is long enough since lunch that most the villiagers have returned to the fields. There are a few faces in windows and a couple doors open to see what the yelling is about, but not the great crowds one might expect in a larger town.

Semabin immediately charges forward and tries to tackle Jim.

Deos will simply try to keep pace, and see if he can discover where they are running to. (assuming they are not just running off in a blind panic). Seeing Semabin's approach, and if the opportunity presents itself, he will try to grab ahold of one of them, as he's never tried grappling someone before (melee touch +0, grapple +0). If he is allowed any attacks of opportunity, he will make them as unarmed trip attempts (melee touch +0, +0 strength modifier).
