I just got back from seeing Kung Fu Hustle. This film is being marketed as a comedy. And while there are humorous aspects in the film, it is not a comedy. What it is is one of the finest examples of the philosophy and mind set behind martial arts that I've ever seen. The only film that has done it better was Circle Of Iron with David Carradine (he plays six roles in the film). To really appreciate Kill Bill, see Circle Of Iron.

Kung Fu Hustle is set in a mythic 30's era China. The director uses many classic Chinese historical and mythical elements to create a modern era myth with Western undertones. He also pays homage to American cinematography. This is an excellent martial arts film. As a film in general it also holds up well. I recommend it.

I give it a 9. If you were ever entertained by cheesy 70's kung fu films then this movie is the pinnacle to which they aspired to. For being billed as a comedy this kicks serious kung fu butt. I will agree that the plot was sort of weak, but most kung fu films don't have very deep plots either.

This movie had so many scenes that I thought were just awesome. I think my favorite scene has to be the musical fight ;) for those who have seen the movie.

My fiance doesn't like these kind of films and she was impressed, so that is definitely a good endorsement.

I gave it a 6. It had it's moments, but I thought that a lot of the humor was just too dumb.

I did really like the musical fight though.

Okay, I saw it, and I gave it a 7. If I hadn't had such high expectations, it mighta scored better.

My complaints:
-The previews made it look like a musical (as I said earlier), but apart from one brilliant early scene, it's not. I think there's great potential for a kung fu musical; this one didn't tap that potential. Ah well: just a case of wrong expectations.
-The theater we saw it in had the volume turned way up, so hte Lion's Roar actually hurt to hear.
-Several of the scenes had violence in them that really wasn't funny--I'm slightly squeamish, and it crossed my preferred limits a few times (especially early on).

Other than that, it was brilliant. There are several scenes in it that still have me giggling, a couple days after seeing it.

Still, though, I preferred Shaolin Soccer.

I was also a bit disappointed by the dearth of dancing and musical aspects, but it was still a great, great movies. My friends and I were laughing the entire time.

That was an awsome scene, you are just too soft. :]

The bit with the cat was a riot, and I like cats.

I saw it and loved it. Gave it a 9. My favorite scene was the black-suited men literally raining down around Pig Sty village.

I, too, found the single non-subtitled joke extremely funny...though it took me a moment :)

9. The scene with Stephen Chow looking at the door that the Beast was behind.... and it opens and blood starts pouring out a la The Shining. My brother and I were practically on the floor we were laughing so hard.
