Yeah, that pretty much nails it, but we can do without someone's assumptions about gaming foisted off on us like the rule of law. Sadly, that's what this module seems to generate from those ill-equipped to deal with such challenges.

If you don't like the module, don't whine and cry about it. Find your own way to get through it and/or leave your morality issues at the entrance.

Jokamachi, when I asked for cessation of insults, I meant for ALL posters. :) That includes comments about "whining and crying," as well as people assuming that those who like the module were metagaming or lying.

Surely there's ways people can give their honest opinion without character assumptions about fellow gamers? I just did!

Hehe, that 10-by-10 foot exploration method reminds me that S1 is probably the ultimate 10 foot pole adventure. Never go in there without one (or several dozen of them)

Edit: And you dont have to pay a funeral for a 10 foot pole

This is quite true... it's why it's as tough on a DM to run, as it is on players to play.

Is "tough for a DM to run" a feature of straight 10-outta-10, i.e., perfect, module?

Green Slime? Remember that back then Green Slime was far more common, and was deadlier; if adventurers ever had a description of something green and moldy, then they treated it like GS even if it wasn't! Much poor innocent algae died for no reason back in those early days.
I began playing back then (I'm no young'n) so I do remember how bad green slime was

This is where description comes into survival - the description of the tapestries is "The tapestries, which appear to feature weed-grown rocks and green and golden tan scenes of undersea life" Depending on your DM's descriptive style you may or may not have thought green slime.

Generally speaking, slime could also be burned off, too. If you were willing to brave the wizard's fireball as an insta-cleaning technique, you'd live.
Except in ToH - if these fall on your character he is dead - no chance to do anything.

Nope, just a couple of elves with a damned good chance, or a party creeping 10-foot by 10-foot section and trying not to miss a trick. I don't recall a single secret door that would have killed the adventure if you didn't find it, though -- all it meant was you had to take a harder way around.
I didn't say they would kill the adventure. Failing to detect one of the pit traps, falling in (76% chance of falling in even with an 18 DEX), getting impaled on 1-3 poison coated spikes and failing one of those saving throws would kill your character. ;)

recognizing it through knowledge checks and detection spells.

3E (or 3.5E) correct?
How did you rule the antimagic on them?
Wouldn't that foil detection spells?

As for a serious group having the WoSD&TD, back in the day it wasn't as easy as having the craft wand feat, some cash and some time :D

Except that only worked 4 outta 6 times :D

Stanislaw Wyzlowski, the Giant from Krakow, would disagree!

It was 3.0

Yes, but the characters could tell by looking at their own magical items when they had entered into one of these places and where catious then.

Bah - play it safe. Get an 11-foot pole! :D (Edit: I was going to make an Eastern European joke, but I can see that I was beaten to it!)

... unless you're a druid. :)

Then go for Spinal Tap

Our group was cautious also - but when one person risked holding aside the tapestry to let the others get through the secret door - that was when the room went wacky and out came the dice and a d% later 4 characters are dead - no save.

That is curious, I'll have to re-read that; my experiences were probably the result of a DM rewarding two frantic players thinking creatively. :)
