Re-Reading 1e

However true this may be, it does point out the problem. Not only can we not agree on what "D&D" means, we can't even agree on what "really" means. So when we start discussing what is "really D&D" we start off not even talking about the same thing. No wonder such discussions go nowhere.

Agreed.

So, shall we allow it to fall by the wayside & continue to enjoy the "re-reading 1e" part of the thread?

:D

Well, you can't quite say "not get a mention". In the DMG there's 3-4 magic items that grant it. The psionic combat tables take it into account. The "make a demon" appendix has it in a table. Etc.
Yeah, you're right. More as "how it works doesn't get a mention".

IIRC, either D&DG or MM2 provides a better explanation than in MM1. Roger Moore also wrote a good article on MR: "Magic Resistance: What It Is, How It Works" (Dragon 79). It's worth digging up!

Will do! I finally have a reason to poke through my Dragon Archive CDs. :) They've been fallow through a few computer rebuilds.

Also, as a side note, I looked at Unearthed Arcana the other day. And ... wow. Back when I was a kid, it was the best thing since sliced bread. Now, I hate to say it, but I can't imagine allowing most of the options. As splatbooks go, I think it bumped up the power curve more excessively than any 3e supplement I've ever seen. The races, in particular, are ... crazy.

... and magic items and possibly exotic equipment. And the simple "System I" unarmed combat.
Yeah, in fairness, the polearm chapter was the only thing that made the 1e weapon list comprehensible. ;)

(not that any of my players ever threw glaives, thinking they were from Krull and not history... well, okay, maybe a few...)

my re-reading

I re-read the race and classes section this past year. I was stunned by the alignment breakdown of the 1/2 elf vs. the 1/2 orc. The are the same. Which means an npc 1/2 elf is just as likely to be evil as a 1/2 orc by raw. Which amazed me.

Jeez, you don't think it's reasonable for a gnome to be able to summon an earth elemental just by being a gnome? What a hardass DM you are! ;)
